SANTA ANA – Providence Hall’s Lacey Gonzalez made two free throws with 13.2 seconds to play to secure a 49-46 victory over Rio Hondo Prep in the CIF-Southern Section Division 6 girls championship basketball game on Saturday afternoon at Mater Dei High.
The Kares cut the Lions’ lead to 47-46 with 1:08 to play on a pair of Colleen Drain free throws. Rio Hondo had a chance to win the game. Both teams missed field-goal attempts and after a Kares turnover, Olivia Borroca, who broke a 44-44 tie with a 20-footer, threw up a 45-footer, thinking the clock was about to expire. Erin Murphy rebounded the shot, which was nowhere near close to the basket and was immediately fouled by the Lions with 17.1 seconds to play. She missed the front end of the one-and-one and Sydney Hedges of Providence rebounded. Gonzalez then made both free throws. The Kares’ Madison Loomis missed a 12-footer from the baseline that hit the side of the backboard to end the game.
SANTA ANA – There are 14 CIF-Southern Section football championship banners hanging in the Rio Hondo Prep gymnasium.
The Kares can hang one more in their new gym; for one of the sports in which the new facility was built. The boys basketball team defeated Trinity Classical Academy, 47-40, to win the CIF-SS Division 6 title Saturday morning at Mater Dei High in Santa Ana.
Christian Torrico scored 19 points and Ryan Wiley, after a slow start, thanks to the Knights’ double teaming, scored 16. The Kares also survived rough fourth-quarter free-throw shooting, hitting 4 of 7 of their foul shots in the quarter.
It gives the Kares two CIF-SS boys titles this school year. Every member of the basketball team was on the CIF-SS Northeast Division winning football team.
