West Covina, Baldwin Park receive CIF-SS at-large bids; Temple City, Crescenta Valley denied

West Covina High School usually plays one of the tougher football schedules in the area. That philosophy paid big dividends for the Bulldogs Saturday.
West Covina, after finishing the regular season 5-5 overall and losing the third-place tiebreaker to Diamond Bar in the Hacienda League, received the lone at-large bid for the Southeast Division when the CIF-Southern Section released the at-large entries for the upcoming divisional playoffs.
The brackets will be released Sunday.
Baldwin Park, which was 7-3 and finished fourth in the Valle Vista League, was the only other area team to receive an at-large bid, getting a spot in the Mid-Valley playoffs.
Bishop Amat, which was hoping for a spot in the Pac-5 Division, and Glendora, looking to make the Inland Division bracket, were denied.

  • Shoulda beat Burroughs

Hard to make a case for Temple City after losing heavily to the three teams above them and not doing much in the preseason. CV on the other hand…they really got screwed, especially since West Covina was a lot less competitive against the top 3 in their league.

I’d have to respectfully disagree on this one. CIF got this one right. A 5-5 WC wouldn’t be 5-5 if they played CV’s schedule and CV wouldn’t be 8-2 had they played WC’s schedule.

      Compare the pre-seasons:

CV: Verdugo Hills, San Marino, La Canada

WC: Colony, LB Wilson, South Hills, Chino Hills

      Compare the Leagues:

Pacific: Arcadia, Burbank, Burroughs, Glendale, Hoover, Muir, Pasadena

Hacienda: Bonita, Diamond Bar, Diamond Ranch, Los Altos, Rowland, Wilson

Half of the Hacienda spent most of the season on the CIF Southeast Top 10, and playing the likes of Chino Hills, South Hills, and Colony is nothing like going up against Verdugo Hills, San Marino, and La Canada.

Again, CIF got this one right.

  • So their efforts are not accepted then. Really sorry for the team this season. It’s too hard to get involved and take advantage
