Alex Rivera to hand over reigns as Flintridge Prep AD

By Keith Lair
Alex Rivera will be saying goodbye as the Flintridge Prep athletic director, ending a 28-year reign in July, one of the longest-serving ADs in the San Gabriel Valley. He will become the school’s Director of Athletic Initiatives.
“It’s an idea I started about six years ago,” he said. “To get athletes more involved in the community. Having them help out and realize how fortunate they can do things and how we can help others who can’t.”
Rivera, who has taught at the school since 1978 and been the athletic director since 1986, will oversee the Athletic Council on Leadership, directing sports initiatives in the Pasadena area and Nicaragua. He will begin a Boys & Girls Club of Pasadena camp on campus this summer, continue working with the Special Olympics and also develop alumni athletic affinity groups.
Rivera will hand off his duties to basketball coach Garrett Ohara, who has been the assistant athletic director the last two years.
“He’s synonymous with Flintridge athletics,” Ohara said.
