CLOVIS – Cravon Gillespie was the forgotten competitor.

The Monrovia High School senior was not expected to be one of the favorites as the fastest runner in the state. Gillespie nearly caught champion Curtis Godin of Mater Dei in the 100-meter championship race at the CIF State Track and Field finals on Saturday night before 9,123 people at Clovis’ Buchannan High.

“That was incredible,” Monrovia coach Mike Knowles said. “He did an incredible job. All his hard work paid off. He ran a perfect race.”

Saturday night he became very well known. He nearly chased down Godin to finish second in his biggest race of his life.
