GLENDORA — Former South Hills High School football coach, who is now at Maranatha, made a triumphant return to the East Valley Thursday night.
Caleb Devine rushed for 212 yards and two touchdowns and Eli Snyder threw for 171 and two scores and the Minutemen stayed undefeated with a 35-26 victory over Azusa in a nonleague game at Citrus College.
Xavius Boone also had 126 yards receiving and a touchdown for Maranatha, who improved to 3-0. Joseph Ramirez accounted for 241 yards and two touchdowns and Angel Maldonado rushed for 107 and two scores for the Aztecs, which slipped to 0-2.
Maranatha coach Steve Bogan: “Football is football. I’m happy where I’m at. I’ve been at two great places. It’s just great to be coaching young men who has passion and it’s always great to be (on this side of town).”
Azusa coach Joe Scherf: “We found out a little bit about our self (in the second half). We just need to put it all together. We’re a young team, making a lot of mistakes, but by the time we hit league, we’ll have fixed a lot of things.”
Maranatha’s Caleb Devine (on 68-yard TD run): “That was all God. I’m thankful what the Lord has given me, every night, every Friday night. So that was all God right there.”
RIO HONDO PREP 20, GABRIELINO 16
SAN GABRIEL — Rio Hondo Prep had little intention of passing the football in its nonleague game against host Gabrielino High School on Thursday night. The Kares ran the ball again and again and rallied to a 20-16 victory.
“We knew if they had the ball, especially (quarterback Elijah Peters), they had a chance for the big play,” Kares senior running back Gio Perez said. “If we kept the ball out of their hands, we could have a great second half.”
Rio Hondo Prep (2-1), trailing 16-14 at the half, ran the ball on 39 of its 41 plays in the second half. They went for it on fourth down six times, succeeding five times.
“I think we started to play a little bit,” Rio Hondo Prep coach Ken Drain said. “I think it kind of wore them out on defense.”
