When Tim Tucker completed his Pasadena High School, Wyoming and then Westmont playing careers, the last thing he expected was to be a high school basketball coach.
“When I got into this game, I did not think that I would be this long in high school ball,” Tucker said. “I though I was going to be John Wooden or something like that and coaching UCLA. God had a different plan. Its just been a great career.”
On Thursday night, the 54-year-old reached a major milestone, his 400th career victory. Maranatha High School defeated visiting Oak Park, 60-53, in the quarterfinals of the 11th annual Rose City Roundball Classic.
“I am just excited,” he said. “I think back and 400 is just as exciting as the first time.”
After the game, Tucker was greeted by his high school coach, George Terzian, along with his longtime Pasadena assistant and current Buldog coach, Tony Brooks. Maranatha presented Tucker with an autographed basketball and had specially designed T-shirts depicting his 400 victories.
The Minutemen will play Cantwell-Sacred Heart in Friday’s semifinals at 8 p.m. In the other semifinal, Price faces Chino Hills at 6:30 p.m.
