LA CANADA >> It’s not surprising that Monrovia and La Canada high schools played to a tie in a boys soccer game.

But it was the CIF-Southern Section Division 6 semifinals and no ties would be allowed. Monrovia scored on all four of its penalty-kick attempts, Wildcats goalkeeper Taylor Barstow stopped two shots and Monrovia will advance to the division’s finals against another Rio Hondo League opponent, South Pasadena, on Saturday at 5p.m. at Warren High in Downey.

“We’ve been working since August on fitness,” Monrovia coach Mike Williams said. “We worked hard and they’re seeing it pay off. At the end of regulation, they looked pretty beat. We still had gas left.”

The Wildcats, with the 1-1 (4-2) victory, advance to the finals for the first time.
