MONTEBELLO — It took Jarrett Tan three games to get going.
The San Gabriel High School junior outside hitter had eight of the Matadors’ first 10 points of the third game to help in an easy three-game sweep of host Montebello in the Almont opener for both teams on Thursday evening.
“The guys gave me a spark by getting the ball to me,” Tan said.
He had 10 kills in the game, 14 for the match in a 25-21, 25-14, 25-10 victory. San Gabriel won its 10th consecutive match after starting the season with back-to-back loses. .
Richard Mai had 11 kills, six in the second game, and two blocks and Austin Tien had 10 kills.
The Oilers (4-15), in their league opener, had a lead as big as 15-11 in the first game, but the Matadors went on a 14-6 run to close out the game. The Matadors dominated the last two games.
Alejandro Jimenez had six kills to lead Montebello.

Maranatha 3, Whittier Christian 0 — Senior Paul McAllister threw a shutout, Daniel Netz went 2 for 2 with an RBI double and his brother, freshman Dawson Netz, had an RBI double in an Olympic League game for the Minutemen (4-3-1, 1-1). The Heralds (6-5, 1-2) lost their second consecutive game.
Pasadena Poly 6, Providence 3 — Sophomore Sean Tibay went 3 for 4 with a double and four RBIs and freshmen Franco Alonso scattered six hits and game up one earned run in the complete-game nonleague win. He struck out five. The Panthers (4-7) had 14 hits.
Montebello 10, Alhambra 4 — Gilbert Romero went 3 for 4 with a triple and an RBI for the Moors (7-5-1, 1-2) in an Almont League loss.

Boys tennis
San Marino 17, Temple City 1 — Derek Chen, Jacob Lui and Arthur Wicke each swept in singles and the team of Ryan Cheng and Tyler Tseng swept in doubles for the Titans (6-1, 2-0) in a Rio Hondo League match.

Boys golf
Temple City 217, South Pasadena 241 — Ryan Sun shot 37 at Almansor Golf Course for the Rams (2-1) in a Rio Hondo league match.

Boys swimming
Pasadena 102, Duarte 3 — The Bulldogs won each event to defeat the Falcons in a nonleague meet. Ashford Milne won the 200 freestyle (2:7.44) and the 500 freestyle (5:47.54) and Jack Graham won the 50 freestyle (25.41) and the 100 freestyle (1:00.06) for Pasadena (3-2). Pasadena’s Emilio Lopez won the 200 IM (2:40.20), Nate Munsell won the 100 butterfly (1:04.52), Jordan Guzman won the 100 backstroke (1:21.17) and Jakob Juarez won the 100 breaststroke (1:21.17). The Bulldogs also won the 200 medley relay, 200 free relay and the 400 free relay.

Pasadena 129, Duarte 32 — Shannon Brierty won both the 200 freestyle (2:14.90) and the 500 freestyle (5:47.37) and Isabelle Lepesant won the 200 IM (2:23.63) and the 100 breaststroke (1:18.92) for the Bulldogs (2-3) in a nonleague meet. Elisa Novo won the 50 freestyle (32.31), Sophia Cimino won the 100 butterfly (1:17.92), Tess Perkins won the 100 freestyle (1:02.70) and Claire Morrison won the 100 backstroke (1:15.46) for Pasadena.

Maranatha 17, Village Christian 1 — Matthew Alleman and Bryan Lin swept in singles for the Minutemen (5-2) in their Olympic League opener. Also contributing to Maranatha’s win were the teams of Kelvin Ye and Drew Sierra, Billy Tan and Matthew Leiva and Ben Smith and Julian Lin, who swept in doubles.

Temple City 6, San Marino 1 — Angel Wintercorn pitched a one-hitter, striking out nine, Haley Mitchell hit a homer and Juliette Marini had a double for the Rams (5-5-1, 2-0) in a Rio Hondo League game.
Pasadena Poly 12, Mayfield 1 — Brennah Bronk pitched a complete game, striking out two, and went 1 for 2 with a three-run homer and Ella Cornwell went 2 for 3 with a triple for the Panthers (2-3, 1-0) in a Prep League victory. Ali Ullin went 3 for 3 with a double, Catalina Alonso went 2 for 3 and Vivian Wheeler had a double for Pasadena Poly.

Maranatha 8, Webb 1 — Paul McAllister went 4 for 4 with a triple, double and an RBI, Charles Acker went 3 for 4, Evan Chang went 2 for 2 with an RBI and Alex Cornwell pitched five innings for the Minutemen (3-3-1) in a nonleague win.

Keppel 12, Pasadena Poly 6 — The teams of Jeffery Jen and Cody Wong and Austin Lu and Andy Xiang swept in doubles and Hellman Zhao swept in singles for the Aztecs (6-2) in a nonleague match. Jack Fleming won twice in singles play for Pasadena Poly.

Pasadena 118, Monrovia 39 — The Bulldogs won each event to defeat the Wildcats in a nonlegue meet. Shannon Brierty won the 200 freestyle (2:11.98) and the 500 freestyle (5:54.75), Tess Perkins won the 50 freestyle (26.80) and the 100 freestyle (1:02.80), Isabelle Lepesant won the 100 butterfly (1:03.28) and the 100 backstroke (1:07.65), Sophia Cimino won the 200 IM (2:50.81) and Elisa Novo won the 100 breaststroke (1:32.20) for Pasadena (1-2). The Bulldogs also won the 200 medley relay, 200 free relay and the 400 free relay.

Pasadena’s Jack Graham won the 50 freestyle (25.62), Ismar Sarac won the 100 backstroke (1:14.28) and Brent Marshall won the 100 breaststroke (1:15.11).

Pasadena Poly 3, Webb 0 — Matt Alison had nine kills, Lucas Bohlinger had four digs and three aces, William McConnell registered 12 assists and three kills and Dean Behairy had three blocks and three kills for Pasadena Poly (7-4) in a 25-17, 25-20, 25-23 nonleague victory.
