Wednesday Recap: Arcadia doubles tennis team advances to CIF-SS semifinals

Pacific League doubles champion Michelle Deng and Lauren Ko of Arcadia advanced to Thursday’s semifinals of the CIF Southern Section individual tennis championships.
The sophomores, the tournament’s top seed, defeated Dana Mackensen and Emilia Gorczyca of Dana Hills 6-3, 6-3 in the Round of 16 and twins Faith and Elizabeth Yim of Villa Park 6-4, 6-4 in the quarterfinals.
They will play the Campbell Hall team of Patria Aziz and Lisa Wagner in the semifinals, which begin at 11:30 a.m. at the Seal Beach Tennis Center. The championship match will immediately follow.
San Marino singles player Anessa Lee and the Arcadia doubles team of Angela Qiu and Sunny Ng both lost in the quarterfinals.
Lee defeated Jasie Dunk of Corona del Mar 6-1, 6-2 in round of 16 and was defeated in quarterfinals by Eryn Caetano of St. Anthony 7-5, 6-4.
Qiu and Ng lost to No. 2 seed Amanda Chan and Sophia Genender of Harvard-Westlake, 6-3, 7-5. The tournament’s No. 7 seed defeated Grace Danco and Taylor Lallas of Brentwood 6-2, 6-3 in the Round of 16.
Rio Hondo League doubles champions Sabrina Lieu and Sophie Lee of San Marino were eliminated in the Round of 16 by Chloe Benedetti and Sophie Benedetti of Oaks Christian 6-0, 6-0.

Girls basketball
Alhambra 37, Pioneer 30 — Ajah Awuma had 17 points and nine rebounds, Sydney Chang had five points and 10 rebounds and Vivian Phan six points for the Moors (2-1) in an El Monte tournament victory.
Maranatha 58, Rio Hondo Prep 33 — Patil Yaacoubian, Claire Sheffer and Taylor Ota each had 12 points and Cherise Masuda, Erica De Guzman and Marina Lacanilao each scored six points for the Minutemen (2-0) in a San Marino Tournament victory. Sheffer also had 12 rebounds.
St. Paul 61, South Pasadena 36 — Jurhandi Molina had 18 points, Valerie Godinez added 13 points and Francesca Facchini had 11 points for the Swordsmen (3-0) in a South El Monte Tournament victory.
Flintridge Prep 63, Louisville 32 — Renae Tamura had 21 points, Taylor Yoshida 15 points and Kaitlyn Chen 13 points for the Rebels in a Providence tournament win Tuesday.

Boys basketball
San Marino 56, Flintridge Prep 34 — Owen Koch had 17 points, Jadyn Torres 11 points and Chuma Azinge 10 points for the Titans in a Providence tournament victory Tuesday. Jonathan Le had 13 points and Jake Althouse had 11 points for Flintridge Prep (0-1).

Girls water polo
Arcadia 9, El Rancho 6 — Goalie Loreny Valdez had 10 saves, Colleen Cook scored three goals and Katie Nigolian and Haley Harvey both scored twice for the visiting Apaches (3-0) in a nonleague game.
La Serna 13, Troy 8 — Carissa Perez scored four goals and Bryanna Santis scored three goals for the Lancers in a nonleague win. Elysia Estrada and Bianca Borunda both scored twice for La Serna.

Girls soccer
South Pasadena 1, Burbank 0 — Sophomore Jade Myer scored with an assist from Riley Segal for the Tigers (1-0) in a nonleague match. Goalie Sophie Reynolds had seven saves for South Pasadena.
