The super double top secret South Bay dog beach

Every dog owner in San Pedro has heard of it.

"Been down to Trumps?" they'll ask.

They don't mean the golf course. What they're referring to is a stretch of isolated beach near Donald Trump's golf course in Rancho Palos Verdes.

Donald Trump doesn't own this pristine piece of land. And he doesn't really strike me as a dog person anyway -- unless you count the one he wears on his head.

It's the worst-kept secret among dog walkers, but it's a secret nonetheless because, well, it's probably not exactly legal -- government officials tend to frown on dogs running unfettered on local beaches.

It's perfect for people like me. Not only is it fairly close to home, but the last time I took the dog to the stretch of dog-friendly sand in Long Beach, he got halfway to Mexico before I finally caught him. A row of pylons signal the end of the dog beach there, but it's not like I expect my dog to know what a pylon is.

Anyway, the local beach is great. It's secluded. It's mostly surrounded by steep cliffs and rocks, so dogs have a hard time escaping.

The bad news? Well, it's a fairly steep climb getting up and down. That's not really bad news, but if you're not up to it, you'll have a hard time making the journey. And since it's so isolated, there's always a rotting seal carcass or two to make the place smell bad.

So how do you get there?  I'm no snitch. And I don't want to abet lawbreaking so brazenly. But e-mail me and I'll fill you in on the details.

I was there this afternoon and the police and animal control were there giving out tickets to dog owners on the beach. So thank you to everyone that just felt the need to advertise this "secret spot" to the masses. Now please, everyone go back to the ridiculous rules dog beach in long beach and leave us alone....

Why do people feel the need to so smugly announce that the have found a place to go with their dog, and in doing so spoil it for everyone? It is so self centered and stupidly shortsighted to announce you have a secret then proceed to tell everyone.
Thanks a bunch for ruining yet another place that up until now was a small jewel for us to visit, with or without our dog, in a very overpopulated and disrespected coastline.

So, basically, Anonymous, it's OK for YOU to know about things, but then the door gets shut and nobody else can know? That's a rather selfish attitude. And it's not your beach anyway. It belongs to everybody.

I feel Josh has proven himself as a self centered egotistical attention-freak by publishing this "secret beach." Perhaps the intentions were just to get a reaction and to piss people off who rely on this place for possibly rehabilitation of aggressive dogs or just having privacy, like Anonymous. There's actually a private community living down from the beach Josh talks about, and thanks to his public announcement, the residents now can enjoy the craziness of all the public humans, screaming children, and their animals. Gee, Josh, I bet you are voted Mr. Popular of the south Bay by the residents in this secret location which is now public. Hurray for Josh for being Mr. A-Hole of the k9 secret hideouts, of which some of us have been living at for quite some time. I hope Josh never finds out where my private address is for the public will surely surround my place with their families and dogs: fortunately, I like zoos, so bring it on Mr. Media! ooops, yes, I forgot to mention, I enjoy the circus, too, so the more the merrier - NOT!

So much anger and pain, so little time. Breeeeeathhhhhhhhhhe.

love, another human ...and her animals too.

I am leading an effort to get a dog park built on the Palos Verdes Peninsula so that we can have an area to run our dogs off leash without the fear of getting a ticket. If you would like to support this effort, email me at bmegowan@cox.net

About the Bloggers

Daily Breeze reporter Donna Littlejohn has shared her homes with a succession of wonderful, funny, and occasionally difficult canines -- Muffin, Fritz, Ellie, Mercy, Pilgrim and now Cowboy, an Australian shepherd-border collie, and Tess, a border collie. From strong-willed terriers to weirdly obsessed Australian shepherds, they've invaded her world with boundless energy, wet noses, muddy paws and soggy tennis balls. But they've really brought so much more than that -- like laughter and joy, some unexpected life lessons, and more than a few tears along the way.
