Open up and say "roo roo roo"
I took Rocket to the vet this morning for his checkup and shots. We saw Dr. Cassie Jones at Point Vicente Animal Hospital. Rocket behaved most of the time.
I met Dr. Jones about 14 years ago when we were both stationed in Santa Monica. I wrote a story about the clinic she was at. I had forgotten all about it, but when I moved down to the South Bay and needed a vet, I wound up with her, purely by coincidence.
I don't remember who recommended me to her, but the first time I ever went to see her was the day when I had to put my old dog Buck to sleep. She left me alone with him in the examination room so I could say goodbye and she told me to take as much time as I needed. I really appreciated that.
And then, a couple of weeks later, she mailed me a really nice letter of condolence. I don't know if that's something other vets do, but it really meant a lot to me.
Anyway, when I got Rocket a year ago, he weighed 45 pounds.
They weighed him today and I learned that he now weighs 72 pounds!
That's nearly twice as much Rocket!
Dr. Jones also complimented Rocket on his white teeth. I felt like a parent whose kid comes home with straight A's on their report card.
Here he is celebrating:

Daily Breeze reporter Donna Littlejohn has shared her homes with a succession of wonderful, funny, and occasionally difficult canines -- Muffin, Fritz, Ellie, Mercy, Pilgrim and now Cowboy, an Australian shepherd-border collie, and Tess, a border collie. But they've really brought so much more than that -- like laughter and joy, some unexpected life lessons, and more than a few tears along the way.
