Campaign going to the dogs?
There's a new poll that looks at which presidential candidate is leading among the very influential pet owner demographic. From the AP story: "An AP-Yahoo News poll found that pet owners favor McCain over Obama 42 percent to 37 percent, with dog owners particularly in McCain's corner (43 percent to 34 percent)."
Seems voters like it that McCain (left, in a AP photo by Charles Dhaiapak) has a "veritable menagerie" of pets, including dogs, cats, fish and some other creatures.
Obama, who is favored by voters who have no pets by 48 percent to 36 percent, has promised his daughters a dog after the campaign is over. Maybe he should move that timeline up a bit.
"From an image standpoint, nothing humanizes a candidate more than seeing him lovingly dote on his pet or toss a ball around on the White House lawn," said American Kennel Club spokeswoman Lisa Peterson.

Daily Breeze reporter Donna Littlejohn has shared her homes with a succession of wonderful, funny, and occasionally difficult canines -- Muffin, Fritz, Ellie, Mercy, Pilgrim and now Cowboy, an Australian shepherd-border collie, and Tess, a border collie. From strong-willed terriers to weirdly obsessed Australian shepherds, they've invaded her world with boundless energy, wet noses, muddy paws and soggy tennis balls. But they've really brought so much more than that -- like laughter and joy, some unexpected life lessons, and more than a few tears along the way.
