Yankee Doodle Dogs

When I was sent out to cover a couple Fourth of July events Friday for the Daily Breeze, I couldn't help (of course) but notice the dogs.

I came across Diamond, a border collie, and Angel, a "schnoodle," at Recreation Park in El Segundo.

Diamond's owners, Vern and Shirley Reaser of Albuquerque, N.M., were in town staying at the Embassy Suites Hotel in El Segundo (kudos to the hotel for accepting pets) awaiting spinal surgery for Vern scheduled for Monday at a Los Angeles hospital. Diamond, about 4 years old, has served as something of a therapy dog as Vern goes through his medical procedures. AND her owners tell me she understands some 100 words. Smart doesn't even begin to describe Diamond, her master said. She's also very good looking and was quite a hit with folks who stopped by to give her a pat on the head.

And here's Angel with her owner Meghan Jackson, 12, of El Segundo.

"She loves this," said Meghan's mom, Charisse, of Angel's coming to the annual Independence Day celebration.
Angel is 2 years old and is one of those new 'designer' dogs, a combination of a poodle and schnauzer. Which, as it turns out, is an awfully cute mix.

About the Bloggers

Daily Breeze reporter Donna Littlejohn has shared her homes with a succession of wonderful, funny, and occasionally difficult canines -- Muffin, Fritz, Ellie, Mercy, Pilgrim and now Cowboy, an Australian shepherd-border collie, and Tess, a border collie. From strong-willed terriers to weirdly obsessed Australian shepherds, they've invaded her world with boundless energy, wet noses, muddy paws and soggy tennis balls. But they've really brought so much more than that -- like laughter and joy, some unexpected life lessons, and more than a few tears along the way.

Josh Grossberg grew up with the usual array of animals: goldfish, dogs, hamsters, parakeets and turtles. He now owns the loudest dog in the South Bay(Video: Rocket the Dog) and is the least popular person on his block. He spends his free time in dog parks, pet shops and always has an extra plastic bag in his pocket just in case. He also has a cat.
