Limping through the weekend
My dog Tess has developed quite a limp this weekend, she's done something to her right front leg and/or foot. But nothing looks out of the ordinary, no visible cuts, scrapes or foreign objects. It doesn't seem to hurt when I touch it and it's not swollen. I''m thinking she just landed on it wrong and maybe has a sprain.
She was playing a lot with Cowboy in the backyard yesterday as I worked in the house (doing my scrub-woman act as I attacked the kitchen floor armed with a big pail of floor cleaner, paper towels and a stiff brush for those tough spots). Then we were at the dog park in the afternoon where she did her usual frantic ball fetching, leaping into the air a couple times. It was toward the end of our stay there that I noticed the limp.
I figured it would be gone by this morning after she had a chance to rest it all night. But her limp seems even more pronounced now. She's eating and seems to feel fine otherwise, though.
Sigh. Anyone out there make little doggie crutches? Always something with dogs, no?

Daily Breeze reporter Donna Littlejohn has shared her homes with a succession of wonderful, funny, and occasionally difficult canines -- Muffin, Fritz, Ellie, Mercy, Pilgrim and now Cowboy, an Australian shepherd-border collie, and Tess, a border collie. From strong-willed terriers to weirdly obsessed Australian shepherds, they've invaded her world with boundless energy, wet noses, muddy paws and soggy tennis balls. But they've really brought so much more than that -- like laughter and joy, some unexpected life lessons, and more than a few tears along the way.

Hi Donna, Besides giving my older dogs Cosequin, recently I've been giving them Traumeel pills I bought online at 1800-petmeds(you can also by it locally at wholefoods) it is suppose to help with minor aches and pains. According to the description on 800petmeds, it is even safe for pups just weaned. It is homeopathic and originally I heard about it from an accupunctist friend of mine who uses the creme version. It does seem to help with the stiffness my 13 year old Siberian experiences.
I'm not trying to advertise 800 pet meds, so if you want you can modify this if you post it.
Thanks for the input. I've not used 800petmeds, but have found similar sites as well where the medications & supplements are quite a bit less expensive than at the vet's.
My vet for years has advocated homeopathich/holistic medications & supplements so I've been familiar with them.
Unfortunately, it turns out Tess's toe is broken (!!), leaving me again to mutter about why in the world I didn't take out pet insurance on these 2 new dogs......Must have happened when we were playing fetch at the dog park Saturday, she was jumping and running hard, though that's pretty typical for her. But she may have come down wrong from one of her jumps.
Sooooo, she's at the vet's for the day while the craft a little splint for her. No walks for a while and complete healing in 4-8 weeks, plus she'll have to be in one of those elizabethan collars, at first anyway. Sigh. Someone at work wanted to know if she'd get a little cast we could all sign. :)
My terrier from years ago, Fritz, broke a toe once -- well, OK, I sorta broke it. He had this tendancy of trying to defy the laws of physics (no 2 objects can be in the same spot at the same time) whenever I'd walk in the door from work. He was in a full-leg splint, making him look and walk like a little peg-leg pirate dog for weeks.
Homeopathic or not, I don't think even Traumeel will heal a broken toe. Just something to keep in mind when they get older and start moving more slowly...gee in that case, I should start taking it myself. :-)
hey, in addition to the splint, the vet also gave me some homeopathic drops to administer to Tess -- and Traumeel is among the ingredients. So maybe it does even heal broken toes. :)
