Busted on the beach

How much does it cost if you get caught with your dog off leash on a beach? According to an article in this issue of the Malibu Surfside News, one dude was threatened with multi-hundred-dollar ticket! It's on page 15 if you want to see it.

This is a letter I got about it:

I just saw a photo in our local newspaper that states the fine for a dog off leash on the beach is $600. After reading - and commenting on - the Bad Cop vs. Redondo Park Lady, I thought you might find this very interesting at a few levels.

I wonder how these fines stack up against other simple infractions?

Not trying to give you a bad time or start up something, but don't want Rocket to suffer 'those

looks' if you get a ticket like that. I'd gladly take that dog off your hands...

Take care and keep leaving those paw prints on our hearts,

Mari

Take the dog off my hands??? Well, OK, but you  have to take the cat too. And you have to let him burrow under the covers when it's cold at night. And you have to take him for walks 18 times a day. And you have to scratch his belly for an hour in the morning. And he likes a little oat meal in the morning.

Aw, never mind!

Okay, how much would you sell him for?

I wish I could take the cat too but the coyotes, bobcats, mountain lions and owls would like it even more.

Rocket is a truly beautiful dog...his antics just make him more lovable to me. You manage to write in a style that has me and others laughing through our tears at memories of our own companions that have passed through our lives. Bless you and Donna for bringing them back in living color once again in different forms and hairstyles.

I really do enjoy the blog, thanks for all the great reading last year and I'm looking forward to what 2009 will bring in the worlds of Rocket, 'the cat', Tess, Cowboy and all their friends and loose relatives.

My (former) dog Pilgrim (may he rest in peace) got busted for being off-leash in a park one early morning, in the days before our community had a dog park and I found myself with a sofa-destroying Australian shepherd in dire need of lots of exercise.

I think the fine was $180 ("bail" they called it back then on the notice that arrived in the mail). That was maybe 8-9 years ago, though. And maybe it's more for beaches? Ouch.

Pilgrim never did pay up. Typical. He figured it was my job to make us right with the law.

Well, if you live in Malibu you can afford it. If not, get the hell out of their town. It's not like there's not enough coastline in CA.

jeeez there are mean people now participating in the blog ?
YES JOE there is plenty of coastline...for humans to use........Since I am paying taxes for other peoples kids to go to school ( obedience schools are not public schools they are not funded by property taxes) I think my dogs deserve plenty of access to that coastline...but that is not an option in LA County where the only dog beach has very limited usage times and space

The Internet seems to bring out the meanness in a lot of people. I've written about dog beaches a few time and the topic always gets people all worked up.

But I enjoy getting people worked up, so I'll write about it more. That's my new year resolution!

About the Bloggers

Daily Breeze reporter Donna Littlejohn has shared her homes with a succession of wonderful, funny, and occasionally difficult canines -- Muffin, Fritz, Ellie, Mercy, Pilgrim and now Cowboy, an Australian shepherd-border collie, and Tess, a border collie. From strong-willed terriers to weirdly obsessed Australian shepherds, they've invaded her world with boundless energy, wet noses, muddy paws and soggy tennis balls. But they've really brought so much more than that -- like laughter and joy, some unexpected life lessons, and more than a few tears along the way.
