I need a home

My friends Amy and Dani found a dog on New Year's Eve near Compton. He was filthy, but Dani gave him a bath and a warm place to sleep.

But they already have a dog and the two of them were too much for the girls to handle. In any case, he's not theirs. He's either lost or needs a new home.

While I can't vouch for the dog, he seems nice enough. And if you go to this link, you'll see how playful he is. The black dog in the pictures is Drama, Rocket's afternoon girlfriend. She's not available!

Oh, he's a pitbull.

Dani and Amy are hoping to find the dog's original owner or find a new home for him. He's at the San Pedro animal shelter.

3dogs2arms if you follow the link to the craiglist posting you will see that the dog was scanned for a microchip but he didn't have one. He was taken to the shelter and it is my understanding that one of the first things that a shelter does is scan dogs for a microchip.

Additionally, vet offices also have microchip scans. I found a dog last year and took her to our vet office and she was scanned free of charge.

He is such a beautiful dog. I hope he finds a good home!

I believe animal shelters routinely scan dogs for microchips these days when they are brought into their facilities. Shelter staffers are more than happy to find an owner out there somewhere. But you make a very good point and it would be worth double checking. Microchips are incredible tools.

I wrote a story last year about a San Pedro dog that was found a full year after he'd gotten out of his yard and disappeared. Someone spotted the pooch running loose in a public park in Long Beach & took him to a vet to be checked out. The medical staff there "scanned" him for a microchip, which he had, and turned up the original owners who enjoyed a wonderful reunion with their long-missing dog.

You didn't mention if your friends had the dog scanned to see if there was a microchip, if that hasn't been done please suggest it to them.

If there is no chip and no one comes forward to claim the dog, please consider a rescue group such as Ace of Hearts that diligently works to find homes for pits. Dang! I just went to find the Ace of Hearts homepage and it states that they don't take in dogs, they only take dogs from shelters...but maybe they could direct you to some other rescue that works with pits and has an excellent placement record. It's worth a call.
Dog dumpers are very cruel, I've picked up more than my share of their "unwanteds" and turned them into pure treasure.

About the Bloggers

Daily Breeze reporter Donna Littlejohn has shared her homes with a succession of wonderful, funny, and occasionally difficult canines -- Muffin, Fritz, Ellie, Mercy, Pilgrim and now Cowboy, an Australian shepherd-border collie, and Tess, a border collie. From strong-willed terriers to weirdly obsessed Australian shepherds, they've invaded her world with boundless energy, wet noses, muddy paws and soggy tennis balls. But they've really brought so much more than that -- like laughter and joy, some unexpected life lessons, and more than a few tears along the way.
