advanced vet care chinese.jpgCheck out our story today about a delegation of 18 veterinarians and researchers from China who toured Advanced Veterinary Care Center in Lawndale on Thursday. It was part of an exchange that gave the overseas vets a close-up look at how sophisticated veterinary care has become in some corners of the U.S.

AVC, founded by Dr. Michael Lesser, offers state-of-the-art specialty treatments for animals. I did a story on AVC and the rising standards of veterinary care about six years ago when the center was in its previous building, also in Lawndale.

Any of our readers ever used them?

Yes, I've used them. When Cosmo had a tumor removed from his parathyroid a couple of years ago, he was monitored by them until all his levels were back to normal. Currently he is being monitored by their internist due to his late night Advil incident. I have found them to be caring, kind and very thorough in their care of him.

Thanks for the input -- they seem to be very good at what they do.

My former dog, Pilgrim (Australian shepherd), had a tumor removed from his parathyroid gland, too -- several years back, my vet (in Inglewood) referred me to a specialist at a very similar facility up in West LA. I remember buying Pilgrim a green turtleneck doggie sweater (seriously, this was at the suggestion of the surgeon) afterward so the area on his neck would be protected. Pilgrim hated the sweater, which was sort of a red-and-green Christmas pattern since that was the time of year it happened. It made him look like a real dork and he seemed to know it. When I put it on him he just stood there frozen, staring at me like "PLEASE GET THIS THING OFF ME RIGHT NOW." Pilgrim's Christmas sweater, I think I wound up passing it on to the Salvation Army the next time I cleared out some things from the house.

About the Bloggers

Daily Breeze reporter Donna Littlejohn has shared her homes with a succession of wonderful, funny, and occasionally difficult canines -- Muffin, Fritz, Ellie, Mercy, Pilgrim and now Cowboy, an Australian shepherd-border collie, and Tess, a border collie. From strong-willed terriers to weirdly obsessed Australian shepherds, they've invaded her world with boundless energy, wet noses, muddy paws and soggy tennis balls. But they've really brought so much more than that -- like laughter and joy, some unexpected life lessons, and more than a few tears along the way.

Josh Grossberg grew up with the usual array of animals: goldfish, dogs, hamsters, parakeets and turtles. He now owns the loudest dog in the South Bay(Video: Rocket the Dog) and is the least popular person on his block. He spends his free time in dog parks, pet shops and always has an extra plastic bag in his pocket just in case. He also has a cat.
