Wow. My dogs headed straight for the backyard, I almost followed!

A pretty good shake here in San Pedro.

***Update: Quake measured 4.7 with the epicenter near Inglewood-Hawthorne-Lennox. Check the Daily Breeze home page for more updates as they become available.

Everyone OK? Pets too?

***Photos just in at our Breaking News blog and at the Daily Breeze home page.

And be sure also to check out the very handy Daily Breeze disaster prep guide.

Before the next one hits.

Looks like it was centered right in the South Bay, Inglewood-Hawthorne Lennox area, between 4.7 and 5.0 from what preliminary reports are saying.

Scared the heck out of us. Indi was lounging on the bathroom rug and just got up and ran out. Now she doesn't know what to do with her self. She is just standing.

My poor kitty is still scared. He keeps looking around and doesn't want to be touched.

My cat was being a royal pain starting about 10 min before it hit. Crying and trying to get as close to me as possible. She hasn't left my side since!!! I guess it's true that animals do sense them before us!!!

I was playing piano, and all of a sudden I felt everything shake. Then the piano almost fell on me so I ran under the table.

Pretty scary.... My kids ran for cover, and my apartment kept swaying. San Pedro really got a good shaker. But my boyfriend, who lives in L.A. said his TV fell over. Prepare for an aftershock people. :(

Let's take a poll people.
Did your animal exhibit any strange behaviors prior to the earthquake?

I can tell you what mine did. Nothing, she slept on the bathroom rug. Not a peep out of her prior to the whole house shook.

I was in the kitchen with Cowboy & Tess, they did nothing strange that I noticed but I was busy so I wasn't paying much attention to them. When it hit they both pretty much freaked of course, dashed out the doggie door. But they seem OK now. Anyone else notice odd behavior from their animals before the quake?

I was giving my 2yr old a bath. Just put the shampoo in her hair. Grabbed her out of the tub (bubbles and all) and ran straight to the front door. Pretty hilarious, but on a serious note, it quite a jolt her in San Pedro.

Donna, here is something to ponder about..why did phones and cellphones stop working?

Good thing I was sitting at my computer working on a blog entry and had Facebook open and was able to communicate with a few local friends that way. I, in a million years, would have not fathomed that FB would become my only means of communication after an earthquake.

Good question (I was on facebook, too) -- there was no power outage here, I was able to keep working on the computer line. Didn't try the phones, though.

CRATE TRAIN YOUR PETS

Everyone, this is a great time to remind you that it is very important that we all crate-train our pets. If there is a big earthquake and you need to seek shelter outside of your home, having a well mannered pet that is willing to be calm inside its crate will make the difference between your being allowed in certain shelters or hotels or not.

Crate-training is a life-saving skill and every pet needs to have it in his or her skillset. Buy a crate large enough for your pet to stand up, turn around, and lay down in. Teach your pet (especially large dogs!) to be willing to hang out unattended in there without going berserk or panicking.

It's also a good idea to have your pet's name, your name and your cellphone number on the crate. It's also a good idea to keep a leash clipped to the door, so you always have it handy.

Crates are the safest way for your pet to travel in your car too-- in the event of a crash, your pet will be safely contained and better protected. With your ID on the crate, your pet can be safely reunited with you even if you have to be rushed to a hospital.

About the Bloggers

Daily Breeze reporter Donna Littlejohn has shared her homes with a succession of wonderful, funny, and occasionally difficult canines -- Muffin, Fritz, Ellie, Mercy, Pilgrim and now Cowboy, an Australian shepherd-border collie, and Tess, a border collie. From strong-willed terriers to weirdly obsessed Australian shepherds, they've invaded her world with boundless energy, wet noses, muddy paws and soggy tennis balls. But they've really brought so much more than that -- like laughter and joy, some unexpected life lessons, and more than a few tears along the way.
