I received an email this morning from Nicky Gore-Jones, a volunteer at the Harbor Animal Care Center in San Pedro. The center is filled to capacity and Nicky wanted us to let our readers know that there is a desperate need this weekend for people to adopt some of their dogs. From her e-mail:

We have several dogs in danger of being euthanized next week unelss we can get the whole bunch adopted this weekend.

We have 78 dogs at the moment and that's just too many ... We've worked very hard this year to keep dogs alive through online appeals and getting them to rescues, including one that I drove to Portland to foster and four that we shipped to
Canada to new homes. ... It's a never-ending battle to keep our San Pedro dogs alive and without lots of people coming in to adopt the animals, we just can't help them.

Visit the shelter at 957 N. Gaffey St., San Pedro, or call 888-4LAPET1 or 888-452-7381.

Here are a few of the dogs available (be sure to click on the jump at the bottom for more pics):

About the Bloggers

Daily Breeze reporter Donna Littlejohn has shared her homes with a succession of wonderful, funny, and occasionally difficult canines -- Muffin, Fritz, Ellie, Mercy, Pilgrim and now Cowboy, an Australian shepherd-border collie, and Tess, a border collie. From strong-willed terriers to weirdly obsessed Australian shepherds, they've invaded her world with boundless energy, wet noses, muddy paws and soggy tennis balls. But they've really brought so much more than that -- like laughter and joy, some unexpected life lessons, and more than a few tears along the way.

Josh Grossberg grew up with the usual array of animals: goldfish, dogs, hamsters, parakeets and turtles. He now owns the loudest dog in the South Bay(Video: Rocket the Dog) and is the least popular person on his block. He spends his free time in dog parks, pet shops and always has an extra plastic bag in his pocket just in case. He also has a cat.
