Daily Breeze reporter Donna Littlejohn has shared her homes with a succession of wonderful, funny, and occasionally difficult canines -- Muffin, Fritz, Ellie, Mercy, Pilgrim and now Cowboy, an Australian shepherd-border collie, and Tess, a border collie. From strong-willed terriers to weirdly obsessed Australian shepherds, they've invaded her world with boundless energy, wet noses, muddy paws and soggy tennis balls. But they've really brought so much more than that -- like laughter and joy, some unexpected life lessons, and more than a few tears along the way.

He now owns the loudest dog in the South Bay(Video: Rocket the Dog) and is the least popular person on his block. He spends his free time in dog parks, pet shops and always has an extra plastic bag in his pocket just in case. He also has a cat.

You may be right about the chihuahua size differential. Sandy brought the coupler to work today and it's awfully short! I've had two dogs forever, but usually there's an age difference so such a device was never practical for me -- as you mentioned, dogs need to walk at the same pace for these things to work. Tess & Cowboy, however, are close in age and walk shoulder to shoulder as it is, so that's what got me thinking it might be worth a try. But I think I'll probably need a longer coupler.
I've used the couplers, and also find that the 'stop and squat' moments are troublesome. We ended up using it for power walking and I'd only attach it after my dogs had finished with their hygiene.
I will caution to make sure that the dogs being attached are of similar size and energy level. I never used it to connect my seniors with my younger fools.
Since your dogs are herders, I wonder how they will react to this. Also can't imagine that a chihuahua size would work for Cowboy and Tess since their shoulder breadth is about as big as an entire chihuahua!
A poop hat, I like that! (Well, not really.) Actually that was one of my concerns, when one stopped to go, would they be all cramped together and get in each other's way. My co-worker Sandy Gerety got one for her chihuahuas that didn't really work out so she's bringing hers to work for me to try.
Those double lead leashes work pretty well. Try to purchase one where you can adjust the length of each lead. That way you can keep your alpha dog more in control on the shorter lead, and the other will follow along on the longer.
I've used a similar product and it works good if the dogs get along.
I had one, and it sorta worked.
It depends on the Dogs and you need to watch out when they have to potty. Especially when they potty.
Most of the problems were related to one peeing on the other's head.
And, try to imagine what happened when the taller girl (Greyhound) one had to make and accidently made # 2 on the smaller girl (Whippet).
We called it a poop hat..lol
Other wise, it worked fairly well :-(
