Goose attack in San Pedro!

There I was, minding my own business and enjoying a summer day at Averill Park in San Pedro, when out of nowhere, we were beset by a crazed goose!

I apologize for the poor quality of these pictures, but I'd like to see you do any better when you're trying to separate two animals going at it like Godzilla and Rodan.

Actually, I think they both enjoyed it. And nobody got hurt, especially me. And if you start feeling bad for that stupid goose, just notice who's advancing and who's retreating.

Dear Nona:
I think you are making a very basic mistake in animal identification which may be putting you at the wrong end of their behaviors. The "duck" you describe as having a 'distinctive look' is in fact a Goose. This you can tell from two sources. One way is the size and bill of the animal (both quite bigger than a duck). The other is the several references to the animal being a goose in the original post. It is a good idea to know if you are dealing with a duck or goose at the bread pond because of the marked difference in aggression you will find in these two distinct bird types. With this in mind, best of luck in your future duck feeding exploits.

I was at that same park recently with my two grandsons. We were just standing by the duck pond feeding the ducks bread which the ducks all seemed to enjoy. When all of a sudden a duck started to attack my grandson. The pic you took looks like the same duck because there didn't seem to be another one that looked like the duck. That duck has a distinctive look. My grandson was just standing there and suddenly that duck snapped at his tennis shoes which surprised my grandson who than took off running away from the duck and I just couldn't believe my eyes seeing that duck chase after my grandson. It was kinda spooky to see the way the duck attacked and chased my grandson. Who would think that a duck would do that. By the way just so you know, my grandson in no way provoked that duck. I teach my boys to be kind to animals and that's why we were at the park to feed the ducks, my grandsons were worried that maybe the ducks were hungry and wanted to feed them.

Geese make great guard 'dogs'. We had a pair at the stables where I had my horses. They are truly mean! But at least they don't eat the chickens...

Daily Breeze reporter Donna Littlejohn has shared her homes with a succession of wonderful, funny, and occasionally difficult canines -- Muffin, Fritz, Ellie, Mercy, Pilgrim and now Cowboy, an Australian shepherd-border collie, and Tess, a border collie. From strong-willed terriers to weirdly obsessed Australian shepherds, they've invaded her world with boundless energy, wet noses, muddy paws and soggy tennis balls. But they've really brought so much more than that -- like laughter and joy, some unexpected life lessons, and more than a few tears along the way.
