skunks and mom cat.jpgThis comes from fellow pet blogger Laurel Babcock at Paws 'n' Claws  in N.Y.

I thought I'd seen almost everything ... but I've once again been proven wrong. ... Most of  us have seen photos of female animals who have taken on the care and feeding of babies who are not of their own kind. But this was surely a new one to me! ... Thanks to P&C friend and contributor Diane for the photo.

Great pictures. Cats and skunks are good pals in my neighborhood.

Back in the 90's my little grey cat Chloe came home from a late night stroll. In the dark, I thought she had been shot by an arrow. However, as she came closer to me, she had a baby opossum on her shoulder. I imagine it had latched on to Chloe hoping she was "mother". The little ears looked like the feathers on an arrow protruding from her shoulder. I gave the little 'possum some KMR and took it to a rescue in the morning.

And Chloe?...she lived a long life. She just got her heavenly reward, she passed on into eternity yesterday afternoon at 19 years, 4 months of age. She was in her sunny spot on a cushion on the front porch where she loved spending her afternoons. I was blessed to have such an affectionate cat for 19 years, 3 months.

If I ever find the pictures I took of Chloe with her 'possum baby, I'll share.

We'd love to post those photos. Condolences on the loss of Chloe -- was she one of the cats who followed Jim on the neighborhood dog walks?

About the Bloggers

Daily Breeze reporter Donna Littlejohn has shared her homes with a succession of wonderful, funny, and occasionally difficult canines -- Muffin, Fritz, Ellie, Mercy, Pilgrim and now Cowboy, an Australian shepherd-border collie, and Tess, a border collie. From strong-willed terriers to weirdly obsessed Australian shepherds, they've invaded her world with boundless energy, wet noses, muddy paws and soggy tennis balls. But they've really brought so much more than that -- like laughter and joy, some unexpected life lessons, and more than a few tears along the way.
