Dogs in Los Angeles city shelters, including the Harbor Animal Care Center in San Pedro, will now be listed on the national web site DogsInDanger.com.

DogsInDanger is a project of The Buddy Fund in White Plains, N.Y. and has drawn controversy because it shows "countdowns" to some of the animals' impending deaths and posts memorials of dogs that could not be saved. Since its launch in 2007, the website has helped save the lives of more than 24,000 dogs. Currently, there are some 515 participating shelters in 45 states.

From the group's press release:

"Through an 'in your face' approach, the website highlights the urgency of the issue and brings attention to this national tragedy ... DogsInDanger.com was the brainchild of Alex and Brenda Aliksanyan, dog lovers passionate about this cause. Mr. Aliksanyan funded the website with his own money after successfully selling his for-profit travel Internet business. He strongly believes that the task at hand -- to end killing of dogs at shelters -- is well within reach. "With hard work, perseverence, and now with support from the Los angeles shelters, I believe we can get there," he said.

From the Web site:

Here's Shadow  (in front), a 5-year-old chihuahua mix who is at the North Central Los Angeles Animal Shelter. She has 2 days left. Her euthanasia date is Friday, Oct. 23.  (ID #A0766478). The reason: No more space at the shelter.

About the Bloggers

Daily Breeze reporter Donna Littlejohn has shared her homes with a succession of wonderful, funny, and occasionally difficult canines -- Muffin, Fritz, Ellie, Mercy, Pilgrim and now Cowboy, an Australian shepherd-border collie, and Tess, a border collie. From strong-willed terriers to weirdly obsessed Australian shepherds, they've invaded her world with boundless energy, wet noses, muddy paws and soggy tennis balls. But they've really brought so much more than that -- like laughter and joy, some unexpected life lessons, and more than a few tears along the way.

Josh Grossberg grew up with the usual array of animals: goldfish, dogs, hamsters, parakeets and turtles. He now owns the loudest dog in the South Bay(Video: Rocket the Dog) and is the least popular person on his block. He spends his free time in dog parks, pet shops and always has an extra plastic bag in his pocket just in case. He also has a cat.
