San Pedro puppy caper tape

Here's that surveillance video that seems to confirm that Bubba the puppy was the victim of a dognapping.

As an aside, much has been said over the last couple days about how the puppy should not have been outside his fenced backyard. True enough, of course. But as one who also once had a dog dig out from under a backyard fence in a home I'd just moved into, I can say this -- it happens.

The gap in the gate where Bubba was confined was no more than a few inches and the couple had put barricades around those gaps. They thought it would be safe to leave him for 1-2 hours while they ran some of the many errands associated with moving into a new house.

As it turned out, the gate was not entirely puppy-proof (I sometimes think puppies are all cartilage, they can squish into and out of the most unlikely places), even with the bricks and trash can they placed in front of it.

Others have wondered if the woman seen picking Bubba up in the tape meant well. Maybe she just wanted to get the dog out of harm's way. But even if Bubba had no collar and ID tag on (which he did), why wouldn't she have knocked on some doors and tried to find the owner?

Anyway -- there's my 2 cents.

The owners said they will be busy this week to better secure their yard. Been there, done that.

Thank goodness Bubba is home safe. A new puppy is often a learning experience and I have a feeling the owners will be sure all escape routes are closed and Bubba is left inside when no one is home.

Thanks Donna for bringing attention to this, it was instrumental in bringing Bubba home.

Speaking as someone who stops and picks up every dog she finds running loose. If the dog has tags, CALL the owners! If the dog is without tags, knock on doors-ask the neighbors if they know where the dog lives. If no one knows, take the dog to any vet's office where he/she can be scanned for a microchip (no charge). If no owner information can be found, take the dog to the proper shelter. That is where the owners will go if they are looking for him/her. If no one comes to claim the dog ONLY THEN are you legally able to take ownership of the dog and keep him/her.

The person who took Bubba should really be ashamed of themself.

Only in a town like San Pedro do so many neighbors come together to help. It's one of the greatest things about living here.

so glad the puppy is home ..we found ourself walking around the neighborhood yesterday with our dogs...peaking into every yard looking for the puppy ...I can only imagine what the owners had to go through....while I have double locks on the front and back ...I still worry a lot about those hooligans from the highschool going around opening gates and letting dogs out (as they have been in our neighborhood prior to summer break)
As Rebecca , we also pick up every dog that runs around on his own ,but I am happy to say that we were able to locate the owners for every one so far.Shows you again how important micro chipping is.

Daily Breeze reporter Donna Littlejohn has shared her homes with a succession of wonderful, funny, and occasionally difficult canines -- Muffin, Fritz, Ellie, Mercy, Pilgrim and now Cowboy, an Australian shepherd-border collie, and Tess, a border collie. From strong-willed terriers to weirdly obsessed Australian shepherds, they've invaded her world with boundless energy, wet noses, muddy paws and soggy tennis balls. But they've really brought so much more than that -- like laughter and joy, some unexpected life lessons, and more than a few tears along the way.
