November 2010 Archives
Two of those missing show dogs we reported on yesterday have also have turned up in Compton. The other two, corgis, remain missing, however.
We got this e-mail today from a reader in Westchester:
This doggie showed up at our house this afternoon - I don't know the breed, sort of like a furry chihuahua? Male, cared for, no collar or tag.
The dog was found in the 7200 block of Ogelsby between Nancy and Kentwood, just north of 77th Street._______________________________________________________________________________
*************Again, this dog has since been reunited with his owner. Thanks to those who took him in and made the effort to get him home again.

The Redondo Beach Dog Park will offer pet photos with Santa and a holiday boutique sale
from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Dec. 5. (Cost is $5 for a 4x6 photo while you wait, proceeds going to the maintenance of the dog park; you should probably leave the cat at home for this one.) The park is adjacent to Dominguez Park on the corner of Flagler Lane and 190th St. in Redondo Beach. www.rbdogpark.comWhat a buzzkill. A Redding couple who were in town for this weekend's national championship dog show in Long Beach reported 4 prize-winning dogs as stolen over night -- missing after someone made off with their cargo van (where the dogs were sleeping inside). The van was parked in a Motel 6 parking lot in Bellflower.
Tracy Manzer, our colleague at the Long Beach Press-Telegram, filed the story this morning.
Below, Kristina Rickard of Redding gathers her belongings, including Lennox, a show boxer, after the van was discovered as missing. Photo by Jeff Gritchen/Press-Telegram.
"We had them in the van because they have heavy coats, It's more comfortable for them to sleep outside where it's cooler. It's better for their coats too," said David Peek, whose girlfriend is a professional dog handler. The couple were planning to travel to New York early next year for the Westminster Dog Show. But unless they find the dogs, they won't be going.
The vehicle is a Chevy Express cargo van with a black box on the back and with dog-paw stickers on the windows. The license plate # is 8D50252.
Anyone who sees it is urged to call 911.
KTLA has also posted a story and this picture of one of the stolen dogs, Trace, an Akita:
The schedule and ticket information is available at the AKC's show website.
Along with the formal breed, group and Best in Show conformation portion, the show features obedience and agility trials.
Among dogs from the South Bay taking part are Bogey, a 3-year-old Tibetan spaniel owned by Gabrielle Beaubrun of San Pedro, and Beau, a Bedlington terrier owned by Joe and Jeanne Carrier of Torrance.
(That's Bogey in the lead above, followed by Magi and Beau.)
Talented dogs. And good looking to boot!
Check out our story from today's Daily Breeze.
And for more photos by Daily Breeze photographer Brad Graverson, see our online photo gallery.
Good luck to everyone! (I guess you shouldn't really say "break a leg" in this instance, would you?)
T-shirts and sweatshirts also will be fore sale, with all of the proceeds going directly to the maintenance of the dog park.
Hours are 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and the park is at the corner of Flagler Lane and 190th Street.

good Black Friday specials for pet-related items today. Here's a website for some items. Looks like PetSmart (and probably most of the other pet store chains as well) are running specials today.Tell us if you found something extra good!
Meanwhile, here's a coupon site for pet-related Cyber Monday (coming up Nov. 27) sales.

O Lord, how manifold are your works! In wisdom you have made them all; the earth is full of your creatures. Yonder is the sea, great and wide, creeping things innumerable are there, living things both small and great. Psalm 104:24-30

******If you and your dog are competing, could you send me an email or otherwise contact me? I'd love to do a story for the Daily Breeze on some of our local competitors.******
In addition to the big weekend festivities, other Kennel Club shows will also take place at the same venue from Dec. 1-3, making it five full days of dog shows in Long Beach.
Six new breeds will compete this year in the national show: bluetick coonhound, Boykin spaniel, Cane Corso, Icelandic sheepdog, Leonberger and redbone coonhound.
Last year's Best in Show winner was Ch. Roundtown Mercedes of Maryscot, a Scottish terrier owned by Amelia Musser (shown with handler Gabriel Rangel, above).
And my favorite, of course, from the herding breed group, Ch. Sylvan Argent Simply Irresistible, a blue merle rough collie shown with handler Brian Livingston.
In the ongoing saga to establish a dog park somewhere on the Palos Verdes Peninsula, the RPV City Council will discuss conceptual designs for Lower Hesse Park at its meeting at 7 p.m. Tuesday. The meeting is at Fred Hesse Community Park, 29301 Hawthorne Blvd., RPV.
A number of nearby residents have complained about adding a dog park there, however. Reportedly council members may direct staff to work on finding another spot for a dog park
should that element not survive approvals for remaking Lower Hesse Park. (A dog park suggested for Grand View Park already has been dropped by planners.)
From Maureen Megowan, who with her husband Bruce has been spearheading this effort:
There were very few dog park supporters at the three public input meetings held this summer, and most of the input received was given by residents close by the proposed park who were vocal in their opposition to a dog park ....
The importance of (Tuesday's) meeting is magnified for two reasons. First, only negative comments about a dog park were received at the three public meetings. Secondly, we were recently informed that the County of Los Angeles would not even begin to review the feasibility of a dog park on the former Palos Verdes Landfill site until June 2012, two years from now.
.... Even if you believe that (Lower Hesse) may not be the appropriate location for a dog park, if you would like to see a dog park built somewhere on the Palos Verdes Peninsula, please voice your support .... If you want to see a dog park built on The Hill, now is when we need your support.

****Updated 11/9/10: I received this email today from Mimi and Tofu's neighbor about the response she's received so far from the post and emails that have gone out seeking to rehome these dogs. (And a personal thanks from me to Josh's sister, whom I suspect is responsible for the Samoyed Rescue contact):
I've received a call from a lady out in Murieta from a Samoyed
rescue goup and quite a few phone calls in regard to people being
emailed yesterday. Approximately 6 or so, one happened to be an old
HS friend we lost contact and enjoyed catching up. Talk about a small
world. Thank you for all your help. I truly appreciate it and so do
Mimi & Tofu.
We got this appeal from a neighbor of the woman who owned Mimi and Tofu (the dogs are shown below). The owner, 94, recently died and the dogs "desperately" need to find a new home -- together.
The dogs are "best friends" and about 2 years old, both spayed females. According to the neighbor, they are "loyal and lovable," housetrained and know how to use a doggie door.
They love children and going for walks:
Their owner died about 3 weeks ago and had no next-of-kin. I am working with the caregiver's family to find these babies a home before they go to the pound. ... They are up to date with their vaccines. Mimi is an American Eskimo and weighs 27 pounds. Tofu is a Samoyed and weighs 67 pounds.
If you can help, call 310-408-1679.
This black-and-white cat, thought to be around 3 or 4 years old, was found recently near the intersection of Palos Verdes Boulevard and Sepulveda (Camino Real). The cat is mostly black with patches of white.
The people who found him believe he belongs to someone and have been trying to locate an owner.
If he looks familiar to you, give Joe a call at 310-613-7644.
Kendall has been missing since Oct. 22, last seen in the vicinity of Anza and Grant avenues in Torrance.
She is red with white markings on her chest and front paws (a border collie/Basenji/Lab mix); 40-50 pounds.
She is wearing a collar and tag and she is microchipped. (This is so important, everyone -- be sure to tag and microchip your animals!)
And this additional information from the email we received from Kendall's sponsoring rescue group:
She might be frightened and shy from being alone, but she is people and dog friendly ....
Kendall was adopted from Love 4 Canines over 4 years ago. She is probably one of the most special dogs we have EVER met and is very close to our heart! She has been living with a wonderful family in Beverly Hills, but while visiting relatives in Torrance, she went missing (she has always had severe separation anxiety).
Spread the word and if you see her or have any information, call Lisa at 310-766-5721 or Laura at 714-609-7523.
This is Hennesey, a 3-year-old pit bull terrier, who has been missing since Oct. 22. He was last seen in Lomita near the corner of 250th Street and Woodward Avenue.
He was not wearing his collar and is not microchipped.
He weighs 70 pounds and is friendly, which makes the owner fear someone may have simply decided to keep him.
Reward is offered.
If you see him or have any information, contact Pam at 310-729-9811 or Jay at 310-291-1511.
This must be the week of lost dogs.
Elvis' owners have been passing out these fliers in San Pedro:
He's 13 years old and lives in the vicinity of Pacific Avenue near Knoll Hill in San Pedro. He was seen this weekend around Pacific and 12th and also earlier on Summerland. He's been missing since Friday night (10/29).
Unfortunately, Elvis doesn't have tags or a microchip (Reminder: Always keep current ID tags on your dog. Microchips are simple and can be a lifesaver; and also take the time to license your dog. All of this usually makes the difference on whether you'll get your pet back or not).
Elvis is black-gray-white, has blue eyes, and is friendly. He will come for food, his owners told me.
If you see him, call 310-413-4197 or 310-413-2923 or 310-427-9603. Reward offered.

Daily Breeze reporter Donna Littlejohn has shared her homes with a succession of wonderful, funny, and occasionally difficult canines -- Muffin, Fritz, Ellie, Mercy, Pilgrim and now Cowboy, an Australian shepherd-border collie, and Tess, a border collie. From strong-willed terriers to weirdly obsessed Australian shepherds, they've invaded her world with boundless energy, wet noses, muddy paws and soggy tennis balls. But they've really brought so much more than that -- like laughter and joy, some unexpected life lessons, and more than a few tears along the way.
