**Updated, dog reunited with his owners; Small, long-haired dog found in Westchester

| | Comments (2) |
****Update 12/1: All kinds of good news to report today. This dog, below -- whose name, as it turned out, was Bosco -- has been reunited with his owner. Turns out he was microchipped and the people who found him had him scanned at a local vet's office.

Two of those missing show dogs we reported on yesterday have also have turned up  in Compton. The other two, corgis, remain missing, however.

We got this e-mail today from a reader in Westchester:

This doggie showed up at our house this afternoon - I don't know the breed, sort of like a furry chihuahua?  Male, cared for, no collar or tag.

found dog.jpgThe dog was found in the 7200 block of Ogelsby between Nancy and Kentwood, just north of 77th Street.

Better not bite, better not growl: Area malls and stores offer Santa photos with your pets

| | Comments (0) |
Taking your pet for a holiday photo with Santa is almost always fun -- and almost always fraught santa dogs.jpgwith the unexpected moment. Or two.

But we won't go there.

Area malls and pet stores are getting into the act this year with several photo shoots planned. So get out the grooming brush, get everyone looking their best, and head on down for a night you (and Santa) probably won't forget.

Cats must be in carriers and dogs on leash.

  • South Bay Galleria at 1815 Hawthorne Blvd. (at Artesia) in Redondo Beach: 7 to 8 p.m. Dec. 6; 8 to 9 p.m. Dec. 13. (310-371-7546)
  • Manhattan Village at 3200 N. Sepulveda Blvd., Manhattan Beach: 1 to 5 p.m. Dec. 10 (310-426-6313)

Local Petco stores also will host Santa photos from 1 to 4 p.m. Dec. 4 and Dec. 11 ($8.95 plussanta pets.jpeg tax which includes a holiday card and envelope while supplies last). South Bay stores:

  • 852 N. Western Ave., San Pedro (in the Park Plaza shopping center)
  • 24413 Crenshaw Blvd., Suite 8, Torrance (in the Crossroads center
  • 51-A Peninsula Center, Rolling Hills Estates
  • 537 N. Pacific Coast Highway, Redondo Beach
  • 3901 Inglewood Ave., Suite G, Redondo Beach
  • 8801 S. Sepulveda Blvd., Westchester

Petsmart: 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Dec. 4-5, 11-12 and 18-19. Local stores:

Centinela Feed & Pet Supplies
(Long Beach store, 4700 E. Pacific Coast Highway) will have a photo event with Santa and his Elf (yes, that's singular -- everyone's downsizing this year) from 5 to 7 p.m. Dec. 4 ($5 per photo).

The Redondo Beach Dog Park will offer pet photos with Santa and a holiday boutique sale cat in tree.jpgfrom 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Dec. 5. (Cost is $5 for a 4x6 photo while you wait, proceeds going to the maintenance of the dog park; you should probably leave the cat at home for this one.) The park is adjacent to Dominguez Park on the corner of Flagler Lane and 190th St. in Redondo Beach. www.rbdogpark.com

***UPDATE 12/2: ALL dogs now found; AKC/Eukanuba National dog show bummer: dogs stolen

| | Comments (0) |
missing dogs.JPG******12/1/10 Update: The two Akitas, along with the missing van, have been found in Compton. The two corgis remain missing.

******12/2/10 Update: Hearing that the corgis also were found safe, we'll post details when we get them.

What a buzzkill. A Redding couple who were in town for this weekend's national championship dog show in Long Beach reported 4 prize-winning dogs as stolen over night -- missing after someone made off with their cargo van (where the dogs were sleeping inside). The van was parked in a Motel 6 parking lot in Bellflower.

Tracy Manzer, our colleague at the Long Beach Press-Telegram, filed the story this morning.

Below, Kristina Rickard of Redding gathers her belongings, including Lennox, a show boxer, after the van was discovered as missing. Photo by Jeff Gritchen/Press-Telegram.

stolen dogs.JPGMissing are two purebred Akitas -- Trace and Didi -- and two purebred Pembroke Welsh Corgis, Bunny and Peter. The corgis belong to clients. All of the dogs have microchips and the couple believes the thieves were after the van, not the dogs who were in crates in the back cargo area. (Their other dogs -- a boxer, a Brittany, and a Parson Russell Terrier -- stayed with them inside the room.)

"We had them in the van because they have heavy coats, It's more comfortable for them to sleep outside where it's cooler. It's better for their coats too," said David Peek, whose girlfriend is a professional dog handler.
The couple were planning to travel to New York early next year for the Westminster Dog Show. But unless they find the dogs, they won't be going.

The vehicle is a Chevy Express cargo van with a black box on the back and with dog-paw stickers on the windows. The license plate # is 8D50252.

Anyone who sees it is urged to call 911.

KTLA has also posted a story and this picture of one of the stolen dogs, Trace, an Akita:

Among dogs from the South Bay taking part are Bogey, a 3-year-old Tibetan spaniel owned by Gabrielle Beaubrun of San Pedro, and Beau, a Bedlington terrier owned by Joe and Jeanne Carrier of Torrance.

(That's Bogey in the lead above, followed by Magi and Beau.)

Talented dogs. And good looking to boot!

Check out our story from today's Daily Breeze.

And for more photos by Daily Breeze photographer Brad Graverson, see our online photo gallery.

Good luck to everyone! (I guess you shouldn't really say "break a leg" in this instance, would you?)

What a great day for a dog walk on the coast

| | Comments (0) |
Was today incredible or what?

I don't think our daytime temperatures topped 60 and the sky and sea were as blue as they get. You could see for miles, in every direction, from snow-capped mountains on the north to Catalina Island offshore to the west.

So after church, I took the dogs over to the Trump nature trails on the Palos Verdes Peninsula and enjoyed a bracing walk along the cliff top, then down to the beach and back up again.

Whew. Resolution: I'm getting some musher dogs next time to assist with that uphill part of the trek.

Tess and Cowboy my herding dogs, however, did keep me square on the trail.

Black Friday pet deals? Do tell

| | Comments (0) |
If you're out shopping -- and not sitting at work like I am -- let our readers know if there are some black friday.jpeggood Black Friday specials for pet-related items today. Here's a website for some items. Looks like PetSmart (and probably most of the other pet store chains as well) are running specials today.

Tell us if you found something extra good!

Meanwhile, here's a coupon site for pet-related Cyber Monday (coming up Nov. 27) sales.

What are you thankful for?

| | Comments (0) |
Happy Thanksgiving to you all, human and four-footed creatures alike! I trust you're having a wonderful day remembering the blessings of the past year and anticipating the year ahead.

I started out the day by taking Tess and Cowboy on a two-hour hike overlooking the ocean, joined also by a friend from church. What awe-inspiring sights we have here in the South Bay!

It was sunny and 41 degrees at 7:30 a.m. when we began our descent toward the water. Because my hiking companion and I both had other places to be later in the day, we didn't make it all the way to the shore. But even so, the two hours of enjoying God's creation and each other's fellowship -- and watching the dogs have such a grand time smelling all kinds of new smells -- made for a wonderful way to begin a Thanksgiving day.

thanksgiving hike.jpg
The dogs were especially thrilled to catch sight of two wild rabbits who bounded across the trail as we hiked. We also saw (and heard) all manner of birds. The ocean views on this cool but bright sunny morning were spectacular.

Meanwhile, Annie the cat, while she couldn't come along of course, was having some fun of her own as we left the house: She was bouncing around outside around the porch, in full play mode, invigorated by the cool morning air.

And by the way (sort of), did you know that there were dogs who came over on the Mayflower?

So what's on your list of things you're especially grateful for this day? Did your pets get any special (but safe, we hope) treats from the big feast?

I'm thankful to all of you who do so much in the animal rescue and adoption field, caring for the animals that have no one special to look out for them. The work is hard, often heartbreaking -- and never ending, it seems.

I'm also grateful for all of the good, giving and responsible pet owners out there, making sure their animals are fed well, exercised, vaccinated, licensed and microchipped, and, well, simply loved well.

As for those Thanksgiving pet treats, here are some ideas for how to turn some of those leftovers into goodies for your dogs in the coming days. Your dog will love you! (Lean turkey, without bones or skin, also can be "cubed" and frozen for tasty, healthy dog treats, according to my veterinarian.)

Below are some more photos from our morning hike. And I came upon this verse from the Pslams today that I especially enjoyed pondering:

O Lord, how manifold are your works! In wisdom you have made them all; the earth is full of your creatures. Yonder is the sea, great and wide, creeping things innumerable are there, living things both small and great. Psalm 104:24-30

Tess was ready to go.

Oh, the sights.

Oh, the smells!

A very good day.

On to Christmas!

AKC/Eukanuba National show comes to Long Beach next week

| | Comments (2) |
This will be the 10th annual AKC/Eukanuba National Championship dog show with nearly 2,500 dogs competing for more than $225,000 in cash prizes. The show runs Dec. 4 and 5 at the Long Beach Convention Center and Arena and will be broadcast on ABC on Jan. 23.

******If you and your dog are competing, could you send me an email or otherwise contact me? I'd love to do a story for the Daily Breeze on some of our local competitors.******

In addition to the big weekend festivities, other Kennel Club shows will also take place at the same venue from Dec. 1-3, making it five full days of dog shows in Long Beach.

lb dog show 3.jpg
Six new breeds will compete this year in the national show: bluetick coonhound, Boykin spaniel, Cane Corso, Icelandic sheepdog, Leonberger and redbone coonhound.

Last year's Best in Show winner was Ch. Roundtown Mercedes of Maryscot, a Scottish terrier owned by Amelia Musser (shown with handler Gabriel Rangel, above).

And my favorite, of course, from the herding breed group, Ch. Sylvan Argent Simply Irresistible, a blue merle rough collie shown with handler Brian Livingston.

What's an "earth dog"?

| | Comments (2) |
earth dog.jpg
I learned about a new dog specialty today from a man at the dog park who had his Welsh Terrier with him.

Seems the AKC has an "earth dog" category or club that includes events and competitions.

It's for dogs whose hard-wiring involves rooting around in the ground. One of the events, he told me, was to have dogs go into underground tunnels where a caged rat awaited at the end (pet rat fans will no doubt be horrified, I know).

He and his wife have had a good time traveling around, meeting others in the club, as they've competed in trials.

His dog appeared to be learning his craft well. He continuously dug the entire time we were at the park, his face covered in dirt and his owner having to follow behind him to fill up all the holes.

The owner told me, though, that it's helped to focus their dog's instincts on a sport -- as opposed to his backyard landscaping!

What events have you all had your dogs involved in?

Rancho Palos Verdes dog park?

| | Comments (0) |

In the ongoing saga to establish a dog park somewhere on the Palos Verdes Peninsula, the RPV City Council will discuss conceptual designs for Lower Hesse Park at its meeting at 7 p.m. Tuesday. The meeting is at Fred Hesse Community Park, 29301 Hawthorne Blvd., RPV.

A number of nearby residents have complained about adding a dog park there, however. Reportedly council members may direct staff to work on finding another spot for a dog park dog parks new new.jpgshould that element not survive approvals for remaking Lower Hesse Park. (A dog park suggested for Grand View Park already has been dropped by planners.)

From Maureen Megowan, who with her husband Bruce has been spearheading this effort:

There were very few dog park supporters at the three public input meetings held this summer, and most of the input received was given by residents close by the proposed park who were vocal in their opposition to a dog park ....

The importance of (Tuesday's) meeting is magnified for two reasons. First, only negative comments about a dog park were received at the three public meetings. Secondly, we were recently informed that the County of Los Angeles would not even begin to review the feasibility of a dog park on the former Palos Verdes Landfill site until June 2012, two years from now.

.... Even if you believe that (Lower Hesse) may not be the appropriate location for a dog park, if you would like to see a dog park built somewhere on the Palos Verdes Peninsula, please voice your support .... If you want to see a dog park built on The Hill, now is when we need your support.

***Updated: Orphans: Samoyed (Tofu) and American Eskimo (Mimi) need a new home after 94-year-old owner dies in Lomita

| | Comments (0) |

****Updated 11/9/10: I received this email today from Mimi and Tofu's neighbor about the response she's received so far from the post and emails that have gone out seeking to rehome these dogs. (And a personal thanks from me to Josh's sister, whom I suspect is responsible for the Samoyed Rescue contact):

I've received a call from a lady out in Murieta from a Samoyed
rescue goup and quite a few phone calls in regard to people being
emailed yesterday. Approximately 6 or so, one happened to be an old
HS friend we lost contact and enjoyed catching up. Talk about a small
world. Thank you for all your help. I truly appreciate it and so do
Mimi & Tofu.

We got this appeal from a neighbor of the woman who owned Mimi and Tofu (the dogs are shown below). The owner, 94, recently died and the dogs "desperately" need to find a new home -- together.

rehome new mimi and tofu 1.jpg

The dogs are "best friends" and about 2 years old, both spayed females. According to the neighbor, they are "loyal and lovable," housetrained and know how to use a doggie door.

They love children and going for walks:

Their owner died about 3 weeks ago and had no next-of-kin. I am working with the caregiver's family to find these babies a home before they go to the pound. ... They are up to date with their vaccines. Mimi is an American Eskimo and weighs 27 pounds. Tofu is a Samoyed and weighs 67 pounds.

If you can help, call 310-408-1679.

Found cat alert: black with white patches, in South Redondo

| | Comments (2) |

found cat.jpgThis black-and-white cat, thought to be around 3 or 4 years old, was found recently near the intersection of Palos Verdes Boulevard and Sepulveda (Camino Real). The cat is mostly black with patches of white.

The people who found him believe he belongs to someone and have been trying to locate an owner.

If he looks familiar to you, give Joe a call at 310-613-7644.

Lost dog alert: Kendall, mixed breed dog lost in Torrance

| | Comments (0) |

Kendall lost dog.jpgKendall has been missing since Oct. 22, last seen in the vicinity of Anza and Grant avenues in Torrance.

She is red with white markings on her chest and front paws (a border collie/Basenji/Lab mix); 40-50 pounds.

She is wearing a collar and tag and she is microchipped. (This is so important, everyone -- be sure to tag and microchip your animals!)

And this additional information from the email we received from Kendall's sponsoring rescue group:

She might be frightened and shy from being alone, but she is people and dog friendly ....

Kendall was adopted from Love 4 Canines over 4 years ago. She is probably one of the most special dogs we have EVER met and is very close to our heart! She has been living with a wonderful family in Beverly Hills, but while visiting relatives in Torrance, she went missing (she has always had severe separation anxiety).

Spread the word and if you see her or have any information, call Lisa at 310-766-5721 or Laura at 714-609-7523.

Lost dog alert: Hennessey, a pit bull from Lomita

| | Comments (2) |

This is Hennesey, a 3-year-old pit bull terrier, who has been missing since Oct. 22. He was last seen in Lomita near the corner of 250th Street and Woodward Avenue.

Hennessey 1.jpgHe was not wearing his collar and is not microchipped.

He weighs 70 pounds and is friendly, which makes the owner fear someone may have simply decided to keep him.

Reward is offered.

If you see him or have any information, contact Pam at 310-729-9811 or Jay at 310-291-1511.

Lost dog alert: Elvis, a Siberian husky from San Pedro

| | Comments (0) |

This must be the week of lost dogs.

Elvis' owners have been passing out these fliers in San Pedro:

husky missing.jpg

He's 13 years old and lives in the vicinity of Pacific Avenue near Knoll Hill in San Pedro. He was seen this weekend around Pacific and 12th and also earlier on Summerland. He's been missing since Friday night (10/29).

Unfortunately, Elvis doesn't have tags or a microchip (Reminder: Always keep current ID tags on your dog. Microchips are simple and can be a lifesaver; and also take the time to license your dog. All of this usually makes the difference on whether you'll get your pet back or not).

Elvis is black-gray-white, has blue eyes, and is friendly. He will come for food, his owners told me.

If you see him, call 310-413-4197 or 310-413-2923 or 310-427-9603. Reward offered.
