What's an "earth dog"?
I learned about a new dog specialty today from a man at the dog park who had his Welsh Terrier with him.
Seems the AKC has an "earth dog" category or club that includes events and competitions.
It's for dogs whose hard-wiring involves rooting around in the ground. One of the events, he told me, was to have dogs go into underground tunnels where a caged rat awaited at the end (pet rat fans will no doubt be horrified, I know).
He and his wife have had a good time traveling around, meeting others in the club, as they've competed in trials.
His dog appeared to be learning his craft well. He continuously dug the entire time we were at the park, his face covered in dirt and his owner having to follow behind him to fill up all the holes.
The owner told me, though, that it's helped to focus their dog's instincts on a sport -- as opposed to his backyard landscaping!
What events have you all had your dogs involved in?

Daily Breeze reporter Donna Littlejohn has shared her homes with a succession of wonderful, funny, and occasionally difficult canines -- Muffin, Fritz, Ellie, Mercy, Pilgrim and now Cowboy, an Australian shepherd-border collie, and Tess, a border collie. From strong-willed terriers to weirdly obsessed Australian shepherds, they've invaded her world with boundless energy, wet noses, muddy paws and soggy tennis balls. But they've really brought so much more than that -- like laughter and joy, some unexpected life lessons, and more than a few tears along the way.
Josh Grossberg grew up with the usual array of animals: goldfish, dogs, hamsters, parakeets and turtles. He now owns the loudest dog in the South Bay(
That's right, I noticed the dog show banners in Long Beach when I was over there yesterday, that's coming right up. I'll be Sherman loves going to the dog show. :-) Another local dog owner will be running several dogs in the agility competition at the show. As for dog activities, I do hope to take Tess back for some more herding before the end of the year.
Sherman has been herding and is currently doing agility. He is also going to be at the dog show in Long Beach in two weeks in the "meet the breed" booth for Samoyeds.
