Devore shelter: Horses, goats need rescuing

| | Comments (0) |
Received this today from a volunteer at the Harbor Shelter. These animals aren't exactly local, but the need seems urgent and the thought is that with enough folks networking the info via the Internet, they'll find some takers. So pass it on to anyone you think might be in a position to help.

(The shelter ID numbers were partially cut off in the original copy when it transferred to the blog, so the complete numbers are in bold-faced type at the bottom of each description.)

Can anyone rescue these horses & goats from the Devore Shelter in Southern California and find them safe, forever homes, please?

L.A. casting call: You and your dog could be stars

LA dogs and their owners being sought to star in a TV show.

Yeah, you knew this already. But here's one more reason to embrace pet ownership

| | Comments (0) |
cowboy face 1.jpgSurprise (not).

It turns out that owning a pet is a really positive thing. Both mentally and physically.

Lots of studies have shown this, of course, but here's yet more research -- this time done by Miami University and St. Louis University.

...  pet owners tended to be less lonely, have higher self-esteem, get more exercise, be more extroverted and were less fearful about getting close to other people.

In short, the benefits of owning a dog or cat, according to the research, are "broad and wide."annie face.jpg And did you know household pets also help protect you and your kids against developing allergies?

Why, we can hardly count all the benefits.

But you already knew that. We're just preaching to the choir here.

Here's a link to the full study.  The title? "Friends with Benefits."

Is there anything cuter than a kitten? This one's available

| | Comments (0) |
Eeeee!

Kittens. What's cuter?

And if you think this one is irresistible, he's looking for a good home.

The person who found him can't keep him because of her dogs, but she plans to take the cat in for his first shots and deworming.

He's about 8 weeks old.

If you're interested, email Ashley at: jumbojuliet@gmail.com or call her at 310-521-1952.

This dog really is cute. Shadow, being fostered in San Pedro

| | Comments (0) |
This is Shadow, a 6-year-old poodle mix who was sadly abandoned by a family that had adopted him as apoddle 3.JPG puppy.

A Good Samaritan couple took him in and has made sure he's received very good care along with all his shots and vet care. He is "amazingly sweet and kind-hearted."

He weighs 20 pounds and gets along with dogs (both small and large), cats and older children. poodle 1.JPGHe's in "perfect" health. And did I mention that he's really, really cute?

Adoption fee is $300 and a home check will be conducted. The fosters normally work with a  Siberian Husky rescue but took on Shadow as an extra cause.

Contact mercedes.foley@yahoo.com

He is a snuggly couch potato when you want him to be, and full of fun when you are ready to play. He also feels it is important to watch his waist line. He loves daily walks. Shadow is a very affectionate and an extremely kind-hearted poodle mix.

Harbor shelter dogs on danger list: A plea from one of their volunteers

| | Comments (0) |
HARBOR SHELTER OVERCROWDED - DOGS ALREADY EUTHED TODAY - CAN YOU HELP SAVE THE OTHERS, PLEASE?

Today was a tough one at the shelter.  I know we can't save them all, but while walking dogs and doing adoptions, I missed Bambi taking her final walk.  If I had known what was going on today, I would have snatched her up and found some way to get her rescued or adopted.  I'd only known her four short weeks, but she had gone from a fearful dog to a loving and affectionate girl, who loved to relax on the grass with you and give you pitbull kisses!   She was so beautiful and sweet, I just assumed she would make it out alive, that someone would adopt or rescue her!  The only thing that makes losing her any easier is that thanks to the shelter volunteers, this wonderful dog enjoyed her last weeks of life, was happy and loved and she responded in kind.

Sadly, it's too late for Bambi, but can anyone step up to help the other dogs in danger on this list, please?  They are at Harbor Shelter, 957 North Gaffey Street, San Pedro, CA 90731 - telephone 310-548-2632.

BAMBI - ID#A1221591

My name is Cowgirl and I am an unaltered female, black and white Pit Bull Terrier
The shelter thinks I am about 7 months old.
I weigh approximately 42 pounds.
I have been at the shelter since Jun 18, 2011.
This gentle, low energy sweetheart came into the shelter with grotesquely swollen front legs.  All due to foxtails, which had entered her paws and migrated up her leg!  She's been treated and the foxtail removed and she's almost in tip-top shape now!  I wasn't allowed to walk her far today, so we sat in the volunteer room and ate biscuits instead!  Her mouth is so gentle, she could hardly crunch up her biscuits!!!  The second biscuit she gently put on the floor in front of her, then she lay down on my foot and rolled over for belly rubs!!!  She's really a special, mellow little girl, who has been through so much already -- could someone please rescue her????  She loves people and dogs and due to the fact that she has been in the clinic since she arrived at the shelter, the public will never see her, so she will not get adopted.  RESCUE is her only hope!  Please help save Cowgirl!!! She really is a special little personality. HELP???????

Two dogs in Afghanistan headed for new homes

| | Comments (0) |
Here's a nice Fourth of July story about a couple dogs in Afghanistan who were taken in by our soldiers. Their wives are raising funds to get the pooches flown back to the states.

How are your pets doing this Fourth? Fireworks always unnerve my dog Cowboy.

cowboy fireworks face.jpg
But he and Annie, the cat, had a nice moment on the front steps this morning as we were coming back from the park:

cowboy and annie nose.jpg

To the left is Annie's new (very girly) pirate collar.

It suits her well.

And, last but not least, Tess and I are now enrolled in an intermediate dog obedience class. Here's her "LOOK" (at me) command which she's pretty much nailed:

Looks like a gorgeous 4th of July weekend ahead

dog beach newish.jpgSo don't forget about the  many parks -- and a few beaches --   where your dog is welcome in and around Los Angeles. Just be sure to get the animals in before the fireworks.

Send us photos and we'll post them.

Happy 4th!

About the Bloggers

Daily Breeze reporter Donna Littlejohn has shared her homes with a succession of wonderful, funny, and occasionally difficult canines -- Muffin, Fritz, Ellie, Mercy, Pilgrim and now Cowboy, an Australian shepherd-border collie, and Tess, a border collie. From strong-willed terriers to weirdly obsessed Australian shepherds, they've invaded her world with boundless energy, wet noses, muddy paws and soggy tennis balls. But they've really brought so much more than that -- like laughter and joy, some unexpected life lessons, and more than a few tears along the way.
