I had a chance to stop by the Responsible Dog Ownership event sponsored by the South Bay Kennel Club last Sunday afternoon in Gardena and met some folks who have a club called The Usual Suspects.

It's a club for flyball, a dog sport that's actually been around for some time but often is overshadowed by more high-profile activities like agility.

The Usual Suspects Club holds practices at 6 p.m. Wednesdays at Arthur Lee Johnson Memorial Park (formerly South Park), 1200 W. 170th St., Gardena. But they also are looking for a practice site for 9 a.m. Sundays after losing their former one in Torrance.

They welcome new members and dogs of all kinds can participate. The sport, which is something like a relay race for dogs, requires speed, some low hurdle jumping -- and a ball-obsessed canine probably doesn't hurt either.

Current members come from throughout the South Bay, including Torrance, Redondo Beach, Westchester -- and Long Beach as well.

Families are encouraged to participate together.

Email TheUsualSuspectsFC@gmail.com or call 310-649-4404 for information. There are also resources to check out on their website.

And here's a short video clip the club posted:

About the Bloggers

Daily Breeze reporter Donna Littlejohn has shared her homes with a succession of wonderful, funny, and occasionally difficult canines -- Muffin, Fritz, Ellie, Mercy, Pilgrim and now Cowboy, an Australian shepherd-border collie, and Tess, a border collie. From strong-willed terriers to weirdly obsessed Australian shepherds, they've invaded her world with boundless energy, wet noses, muddy paws and soggy tennis balls. But they've really brought so much more than that -- like laughter and joy, some unexpected life lessons, and more than a few tears along the way.

Josh Grossberg grew up with the usual array of animals: goldfish, dogs, hamsters, parakeets and turtles. He now owns the loudest dog in the South Bay(Video: Rocket the Dog) and is the least popular person on his block. He spends his free time in dog parks, pet shops and always has an extra plastic bag in his pocket just in case. He also has a cat.
