Lois and Frank -- L.A. dogs -- need a home (together if possible)

| | Comments (0) |

Got this email today; the dogs are in Los Angeles and the situation was marked as an "emergency":

Lois and Frank are both rescues and they need a new home! Lois is a 3 year old pit bull/basset hound mix. She is an awesome dog, very loving, sweet, obedient and a real looker! Frank is a 6 year  old chihuahua mix with super soft fur and amazing blue eyes. He is a bit anxious (especially with men)  but we have done a lot of work with him and he is pretty well behaved overall. They love each other and would be sad to be split up. But, under the conditions, a good home for both is all we can ask for. Thank you!!

Crisis at Harbor Animal Shelter in San Pedro

| | Comments (0) |
This has been ongoing for a week at least, but I'm hearing that there's a real crisis of space at the Harbor Animal Care Center in San Pedro (957 N. Gaffey St.).

While the shelter is a relatively new one -- offering much more space than San Pedro's old facility -- it also has had to absorb two more ZIP codes in the Watts area as part of its overall city territory. Overcrowding and euthanasia continues to be a grim reality.

I was at the shelter a few weeks ago to get a dog license updated and was amazed at the number of very cute, small adoptable dogs they had.

They also now have 34 puppies that need to get out of there. Here's the email that went out this morning from one of the shelter volunteers:

34 PUPPIES at the Harbor Shelter in San Pedro, CA -- All shapes and sizes, Terriers, Pitties, Chows, Maltese, Retriever mixes, GS mixes -- so many babies looking for love!

We all know that the shelter is a dangerous place for these delicate puppies and if they only had the chance to go to rescue, they would be snapped-up at adoption events, so PLEASE help these sweet little pups get a chance at life, before it's too late?!

The shelter is overloaded and dogs are dying!  Room for 100 dogs and current count is 155, with more coming in daily!  Please help save lives and rescue these cute little puppies?

Please contact the Harbor Shelter, 957 North Gaffey Street San Pedro, CA 90731, at 310-548-2632 & ask for Hal Moore or Leslie Corea - let's get these babies out and adopted ASAP!!!!

Long Beach aims to break a record at this year's dog Halloween bash

Boo to you and your little dog, too.

Organizers of the 11th annual Haute Dog Howl'oween Parade will offer the usual fun and craziness.

But this year's event -- set for 2:30 p.m. Oct. 30 at Livingston Park in Long Beach -- will be vying also to break a world record.

Organizer Justin Rudd is hoping to get the most costumed dogs in a parade.

While the official record is 337 (set by a sponsored event at Petco Park in San Diego), another recent parade in Lakewood, Ohio, claimed to attract more than 400 costumed canines.

The Long Beach festivities include a fair (from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m.) with more than 40 vendors, pet adoptions, and wild animal education.

Parade entry fee on the day of the event is $20 but discounts are available if owners pre-register or have trouble affording it. You can register online.

This year, parade organizers hope to break the world record for the most dogs in costumer in a parade. (File photo)

Does your dog's face say it all?

rover_header22.jpgThen photographer Andrew Grant may want you. Or you dog, anyway.

A casting call to select dogs for Grant's third edition of "Rover," a coffee table book dedicated to the celebration of dogs. Grant strives to find the most expressive dogs and photograph them in a way that captures their souls and emotions.

Cash-only casting fee is $20 ($15 for those who pre-register online). Bring your dog for a chance to be picked. Chosen dogs will be photographed in-studio at a later date.

The casting call will be held from 4-7 p.m. Sunday (Oct. 23) at K9s Only, 2040 Cotner Ave., Los Angeles 90025. Call Kat Kirsch at 310-615-2179 or Elizabeth Held at 310-615-2178 for details.

Proceeds from the event benefit New Leash on Life, a Los Angeles animal rescue.

Along with the casting call, there will be food trucks (for people and dogs), consultations by a casting agency and sessions with a certified dog "communicator." There also will be dog adoptions and grooming tips.

Urgent: Can you help a dog named Trojan in San Pedro?

Valerie Smith-Griffin, a San Pedro journalist, has been posting on Facebook about a stray dog she found who now awaits adoption at the Harbor Animal Care Center in San Pedro.

The situation is serious, however, as shelter workers told her today that due to overcrowding they cannot promise to house him much longer.

She spotted him initially out at the former Navy housing site on Western Avenue where she left food for him, hoping to instill enough trust in her that he'd come closer.

Ultimately, animal control officers took him in and he's been at the shelter now for several days. Valerie's note and update from Saturday:

I saw him again today at the shelter. he took cheese from me and gave my hand a "kiss" when I told him good-bye. He seemed more relaxed today - still on the frightened side. His Harbor Shelter # is A1256250.

He'd been running in the Ponte Vista field and with the goats and llamas - only seeing the goat keeper - I'd been feeding him for a few weeks after I spotted him but because of the trespass laws and high fencing, was unable to try to trap him myself. the goat keeper finally did so and called the shelter to get him. When he was in the field - and it is speculated he was a dump-off - no ID, no microchip - he lived in filth, dirty old appliances, old food containers, etc. The vet tech has told me he has no health issues that would prevent adoption and his "official" adoption day was the 14th (yesterday) I'm invested emotionally in him which is probbaly never a good idea but I feel I can't give up on him.

She is willing to donate financially to the dog's care to a rescue group or individual who can bail him out. But the supervisor at the shelter needs to be contacted asap as the dog's time essentially is "up."

Contact me -- or you can send Valerie a message via Facebook or email her at electrala@cox.net

Clinico changes it's name to Spay Neuter Project of Los Angeles (that's SNP LA)

Clinico, the low-cost animal clinic located on the campus of the Harbor Animal Care Center in San Pedro, has changed its name.

It's now called the Spay Neuter Project of Los Angeles (or SNP LA). The clinics began several years ago in partnership with the Los Angeles Department of Animal Services.

About the Bloggers

Daily Breeze reporter Donna Littlejohn has shared her homes with a succession of wonderful, funny, and occasionally difficult canines -- Muffin, Fritz, Ellie, Mercy, Pilgrim and now Cowboy, an Australian shepherd-border collie, and Tess, a border collie. From strong-willed terriers to weirdly obsessed Australian shepherds, they've invaded her world with boundless energy, wet noses, muddy paws and soggy tennis balls. But they've really brought so much more than that -- like laughter and joy, some unexpected life lessons, and more than a few tears along the way.
