A dog named Christmas

| | Comments (0)

We'll post more about this as the broadcast approaches, but one of my favorite dog rescue groups -- BorderColliesInNeed.org (my dogs Cowboy & Tess were both adopted from BC's In Need) -- is among the many sponsors of the National Pet Fostering Program insipired by a book and a Hallmark Hall of Fame television movie that will air on Nov. 29.

"A Dog Named Christmas" will be shown on CBS and will direct viewers to Petfinder.com to find shelters and rescue groups in their areas that are participating in "Foster a Lonely Pet" program.

The film, based on the best-selling book by Greg Kincaid, is about Todd McCray, a developmentally a dog named christmas.jpgchallenged young man living on his parents' Kansas farm. When he hears that a local animal shelter seeks temporary homes for its dogs during the holidays leading up to Christmas, Todd asks his parents for a dog that he names Christmas.

From there, Todd uses his gifts of persuasion to encourage his hometown to participate in the "Adopt a Dog for Christmas," with lessons in kindness and goodwill flowing abundantly from there.

If you're interested in participating in this program, and can welcome a dog into your home for two months during the holidays, check with BorderColliesInNeed (email them at Rescue@BorderColliesInNeed.org).

And stay tuned for more information about the project as we get it. Maybe we can even feature some of you who decide to bring a shelter or rescue dog home for the holidays.

We carried an earlier post that linked to the Daily Breeze story regarding Mr. Burns, a dog (thought to be an Akita-chow mix) whose life was spared when he was trapped in an auto shop

  mr burns.gif

fire. The shop owner's wife committed suicide by setting herself on fire -- and Mr. Burns, as he was dubbed at Affordable Animal Hospital, was an innocent victim, suffering third-degree burns covering over 60-70 percent of his body before he was pulled to safety by firefighters.

He responded well to treatment and was transferred back to the county animal shelter in Carson where he reportedly had a list of would-be owners wishing to adopt him.

I'm not sure what happened, but somehow he never got taken home with anyone. So now Mr. Burns is with a group called PAL Rescue & Adoption in El Segundo (see him on their Web page) and he may be included in the organization's regular adoption event from 4 to 7 p.m. today (Thursday) at the Petsmart store at Plaza El Segundo, 730 S. Sepulveda Blvd. But since he had to be treated Wednesday for a minor toenail issue, he most likely won't be there until Friday's adoption (same time and place). Volunteers with the group can arrange for you to meet with the dog if you're interested in adopting him.

You can also email them for an application at info@palrescue.org.

My name is Bentley and I am an unaltered male, brown brindle Tibetan Terrier mix.
The shelter thinks I am about 1 year and 6 months old. I have been at the shelter since Sep 05, 2009.

Bentley is not a rescue-only dog, but he needs to go to a place where people will help him overcome his fear.  There is no way he will be adopted from the shelter because he doesn't trust us and we can't show him, without dragging him out of cage.  He's too scared.  Please help this lovely, owner surrendered dog! He needs to get out right away!!!  His eyes say he wants to trust us, but he just can't yet and we all know a dog like this can only survive if a rescue has a foster who can help him - PLEASE?
Bentley is in a kennel with other dogs, so we know he's fine to go to a home with other dogs. HELP???

Must be kitten season

| | Comments (0)

We received another plea from a reader involved in animal rescue about a family of kitties who need homes.

There is the mom (about 1 year old, recently spayed -- brown tabby color, petite, "sweet"); and babies (8-9 weeks old with vouchers to be spayed or neutered at Clinico next to the Harbor Animal Care Center in San Pedro).

There are 2 gray kittens and 2 black kittens, male and female in each color.

If you're interested ("only responsible, loving, devoted people need inquire"), contact Lisa Petrich at detectivelp@msn.com or call 310-832-0006.

The babies (a gray one seems to be left out of this shot):

3 little kittens

| | Comments (1)

I'm still waiting for photos, but there are 3 female (all spayed) kittens, 6-8 weeks old, who need foster homes.

Two are calico and one is gray and white.  They are adorable, but will need someone who can take the time to gain their trust (they come from feral parents).  They are hearty eaters!

Contact is Melissa 310-713-4220.

I will post the photos when we get them.

(I spoke with a contact I have with the Peter Zippi Fund for Animals in Hermosa Beach and she tells me that the kittens are probably at a critical stage in terms of socialization and their future potential in becoming good family pets:  "They need to be around a lot of people a lot of the time or you can lose them," she told me. "At that age they're either going to make it or not. The more kids and people in the household, the better.")

From the email we received:

Hi, this is Payday.  She is a 4 month old female Pit mix.  Her owners weren't taking good care of her but fortunately they were willing to give her up.  Now she is living in a new home payday-2.jpgwaiting for her forever home.  She is a typical puppy.

She loves to play and romp but she'll run to her new daddy when the older and bigger dogs get too rough.

She is learning to be housebroken with a doggy door and she weighs about 20 pounds.  She is spayed, vaccinated, dewormed, microchipped, and frontlined.  Contact Terrell at 323-385-8993 or tc2806@hotmail.com.

Here's another Los Angeles area dog who needs a home. From the email:

Hi, this is Georgia.  Georgia is an all American mutt.  She has the face and coat of a Lab but she has short legs and a slightly long body like a Dachshund.

georgia.jpgShe's also smaller than a Lab but bigger than a Dachshund.  She weighs about 30 pounds and she is about a year old.  She is timid at first but warms up to folks and becomes affectionate after a while.  She is good with dogs, children, and cats.  She is housetrained with a doggy door.  Georgia is spayed, vaccinated, dewormed, fecal test done, frontlined, and microchipped.  Now all she needs is a loving home.  Contact Terrell at 323-385-8993 or tc2806@hotmail.com.

Thanks once again to San Pedro Dogs for passing these on.

About the Bloggers

Daily Breeze reporter Donna Littlejohn has shared her homes with a succession of wonderful, funny, and occasionally difficult canines -- Muffin, Fritz, Ellie, Mercy, Pilgrim and now Cowboy, an Australian shepherd-border collie, and Tess, a border collie. From strong-willed terriers to weirdly obsessed Australian shepherds, they've invaded her world with boundless energy, wet noses, muddy paws and soggy tennis balls. But they've really brought so much more than that -- like laughter and joy, some unexpected life lessons, and more than a few tears along the way.

He spends his free time in dog parks, pet shops and always has an extra plastic bag in his pocket just in case. He also has a cat.
