OK, it's almost Halloween.
What's your dog going as this year? Send us photos of your pets in costume and we'll post them.
My dog Cowboy is going as ... well, a cowboy (blue simple bandana, an understated costume). Tess is going as a cowgirl (red bandana). Annie Oakley the cat is bowing out of the festivities altogether. I guess cats don't really do costumes.
I received these photos today from Pat Hodge in the newsroom here at the Daily Breeze. If you are artistic -- and know the art of pumpkin carving -- you can apparently make one in the image of your pet! More on the jump.
One advantage to being in a dog obedience class is that you get all the latest announcements of doggie events that are going on in the local area (Tess and I are currently going through Barbara Millman's beginning obedience class at Kritter Korral in Harbor City).
At 6:30 p.m. Thursday (Oct. 22), the Lomita Obedience Training Club will host Halloween festivities for dogs and their owners.
It happens at Lomita Park, 24428 Eshelman Ave., Lomita.
The party will include fun games such as bobbing for hot dogs (your dog will have to be pretty good in order to beat Barbara's star sheltie, Perry, who, I'm told, excells in that particular competition).
Costumes optional.
The nonprofit club was founded in 1954 (originally called the San pedro Obedience Training Club) and meets on the fourth Thursday of the month at the Lomita Park (normal meeting times are 7:30 p.m.). Check them out sometime, guests and visitors are always welcome and the club offers a full array of training classes for all ability levels and interests.
Call 310-530-4814 for more information or go to their Web site at the link above.
We asked, you delivered (much to your dogs' misgivings, perhaps).
Well, three of you delivered, two of whom were harrassed in person because you have the misfortune to work with Josh and me at the Breeze. You know who you are.
But now, a third entry! And from an actual non-employee reader of the South Bay Pets Blog. Who was NOT threatened. Honest.
Woo-Hoo!
Indi's Mama (Sanam to those of us who know her at the dog park) submitted a tableau, although in separate scenes, of her dog Indi and Indi's good friend, Charlie (try getting 2 dogs to pose together in costume).
Sanam was born in Iran and grew up in Italy. Since coming here, she's gotten her master's degree and decided to have some fun with American history in her costume selections. Indi, in case you hadn't guessed, is Pocahontas (her full name, after all, is Indiana):
She was named in homage to Native Americans. The word Indiana in Italian means female Indian and after doing some Internet research I found out that it also means land of Indians in one of the Native American languages.
I decided that Charlie had to be a cowboy because I thought it would be funny to have an Indian girl and a cowboy. Historically, cowboys and American Indians have always fought against each other, but these two are the best of friends!
Sanam blames the lack of an actual "togetherness" photo on Charlie, who "will not stay still." We have not heard from Charlie's owner on this point, however, so we will suspend judgement on that issue.
Indi has been featured on this blog before (that's her above). But this is Charlie's debut.
Charlie is a blue nose pit bull who belongs to Rudy, one of Sanam and Jon's neighbors.
He's pretty cute.
And being a good sport.
Yessirree, pardner.
And Indi, of course, looks quite fetching (if a bit long-suffering) in her Indian maiden (faux) buckskin

Here's our latest installment of animals wearing funny Halloween costumes. This one features South Bay Pets regular Carmen, a chihuaha that belongs to my colleague Sandy Gerety. Her other dog Desi is strangely absent from the photo.
We still got a couple of days to go till Halloween. Feel free to send pics to me or Donna.
There's a free Howl-O-Ween pet photo and costume contest coming up this Saturday (10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Oct. 25). at the Studly Pooch Pet Spa in Hermosa Beach.
Professional pet photographer Erin Tomanek of Paw Prints Photos will take a free 5x7 photo of every pet and owner who attends. Pet owners will be asked to donate a $5 "sit fee" that will be then donated to The Mini Schnauzer Rescue of Redondo Beach.
The spa is at 1127 Aviation Blvd., phone: 310-376-7033.
"This is our second year doing a Halloween event," said Wes Murph, owner of the Studly Pooch. "Last year was a blast and this year will be a lot of fun, too. The best part is seeing some of the pet costumes."
Ah, which reminds me.
We're asking all South Bay Pets Blog readers to send us pictures of their pets in costume for posting. Don't make Josh and me dress our dogs up to fill the void!
We posted our first (and so far only) picture, of Pembleton the Bee, the other day.
There's gotta be more of you out there??

Daily Breeze reporter Donna Littlejohn has shared her homes with a succession of wonderful, funny, and occasionally difficult canines -- Muffin, Fritz, Ellie, Mercy, Pilgrim and now Cowboy, an Australian shepherd-border collie, and Tess, a border collie. From strong-willed terriers to weirdly obsessed Australian shepherds, they've invaded her world with boundless energy, wet noses, muddy paws and soggy tennis balls. But they've really brought so much more than that -- like laughter and joy, some unexpected life lessons, and more than a few tears along the way.
