Redondo Beach Dog Park's day with Santa

| | Comments (0) |
The Friends of Redondo Beach Dog Park sponsored dog photos with Santa on Sunday. They sent us a couple photos from the event, which was a big success. Proceeds all go to park maintenance. We'd asked them to share some shots of the event with us.

The e-mail from Nancy Grenier, a member of the RB Dog Park board and a graphic artist who served as the event photographer:

We had a great turnout!  It is one of 3 photo events that we do each year and probably the more popular.  It was a fun filled day for all and  a successful fundraiser for the Redondo Beach Dog Park.

I have attached 2 photos from the event. Thanks for including them on the blog!  :)

Better not bite, better not growl: Area malls and stores offer Santa photos with your pets

| | Comments (0) |
Taking your pet for a holiday photo with Santa is almost always fun -- and almost always fraught santa dogs.jpgwith the unexpected moment. Or two.

But we won't go there.

Area malls and pet stores are getting into the act this year with several photo shoots planned. So get out the grooming brush, get everyone looking their best, and head on down for a night you (and Santa) probably won't forget.

Cats must be in carriers and dogs on leash.

  • South Bay Galleria at 1815 Hawthorne Blvd. (at Artesia) in Redondo Beach: 7 to 8 p.m. Dec. 6; 8 to 9 p.m. Dec. 13. (310-371-7546)
  • Manhattan Village at 3200 N. Sepulveda Blvd., Manhattan Beach: 1 to 5 p.m. Dec. 10 (310-426-6313)

Local Petco stores also will host Santa photos from 1 to 4 p.m. Dec. 4 and Dec. 11 ($8.95 plussanta pets.jpeg tax which includes a holiday card and envelope while supplies last). South Bay stores:

  • 852 N. Western Ave., San Pedro (in the Park Plaza shopping center)
  • 24413 Crenshaw Blvd., Suite 8, Torrance (in the Crossroads center
  • 51-A Peninsula Center, Rolling Hills Estates
  • 537 N. Pacific Coast Highway, Redondo Beach
  • 3901 Inglewood Ave., Suite G, Redondo Beach
  • 8801 S. Sepulveda Blvd., Westchester

Petsmart: 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Dec. 4-5, 11-12 and 18-19. Local stores:

  • 3855-59 Sepulveda Blvd., Torrance (310-316-9047)
  • 730 S. Sepulveda Blvd., El Segundo (310-333-0602)

Centinela Feed & Pet Supplies
(Long Beach store, 4700 E. Pacific Coast Highway) will have a photo event with Santa and his Elf (yes, that's singular -- everyone's downsizing this year) from 5 to 7 p.m. Dec. 4 ($5 per photo).

The Redondo Beach Dog Park will offer pet photos with Santa and a holiday boutique sale cat in tree.jpgfrom 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Dec. 5. (Cost is $5 for a 4x6 photo while you wait, proceeds going to the maintenance of the dog park; you should probably leave the cat at home for this one.) The park is adjacent to Dominguez Park on the corner of Flagler Lane and 190th St. in Redondo Beach. www.rbdogpark.com

Do photos of your pets sometimes feature those creepy, demonic eyes?

The folks at Kodak have found a way to get rid of that (Pet Eye Retouch) -- and as a way of promoting it, they have launched a "Possessed pets" Facebook application page and contest. You create a photo, add a fancy frame online, and enter the contest at the same time.

"Pet eye" is different than "red eye" in photos of humans and the new Kodak fix recognizes the flash in pets' eyes to remove it.

(My former dog Ellie is shown below in an old print so you can get the idea.)

Famous South Bay dogs

Deborah Davidson Harpur of Harbor City has scored quite the coup this month: Her champion agility dog Rickie Roo made the cover of the current (May 2010) edition of Dog Fancy Magazine. For dogs, is that kind of like being on the cover of the Rolling Stone used to be for rock bands?

Rickie Roo clearly rocks.

But that's not all.

Rickie Roo and Deborah's other champion dog, Gigi, also are the cover shot of the 2011 Browntrout Rat Terrier breed calendar. (Photo credit to Pam Marks of the Pawprince Studios)

New "pet-friendly" camera

| | Comments (0) |

The tech pros at Gadgetwise write about a new Pentax camera coming out that they say is

pentax pet camera.jpgespecially "pet-friendly" because it can get close, far away -- and is built to survive the rugged outdoors.

The Pentax Optio W90 includes a digital microscope mode that enables you to capture images of objects less than an inch away.

And there's this:

It also has a new trick that several other camera makers have added this year. In addition to face-recognition technology that can register as many as 32 faces, the W90 includes pet recognition that can find and enhance images of up to three dog or cat faces. You can set the camera to automatically snap the shutter when the pet turns its face toward the camera.

Pretty cool. No more shots of the back of Cowboy's head.

On the downside: It costs $330. Ouch.

The camera debuts in April.

Calling all winter holiday pet photos

| | Comments (0) |

That's right, email them in.

christmas pet generic.jpgYour dogs in antlers, cats in Santa hats. Guinea pigs in tiny strings of glittery garland or sporting a New Year's eve party hat. Horses in jingle bell harnesses.

Or maybe dressing dogs up in silly clothes and headgear isn't your thing. It can be frivolous, we know. Your tastes may be more subdued and understated.

We understand. Costumes and goofy props are not required. We can do dignified.

Perhaps just a simple bandana, or a backdrop or wintery setting -- a nice snow scene works for us -- that's kind of seasonal. It may -- or may not -- quietly (or noisily) reflect a particular holiday, whether it be Christmas, Hanukkah or New Year's.

We'll post the photos here.

Yes, that's right. Your pet can have the thrill of being featured here at the Daily Breeze's hanukkah dog.jpgSouth Bay Pets blog. The invitation remains open through New Year's week.

And don't forget to include some information about your pet.

Send photos and text to:

donna.littlejohn@dailybreeze.com or

josh.grossberg@dailybreeze.com.

We sit here, waiting .....

You can get some photo ideas from the Border Collies in Need site as well.

Hold still! The ill-fated Christmas photo shoot

| | Comments (0) |
Cowboy and Tess are great dogs and really quite photogenic. A Christmas photo of the two of them? No problem, I thought.

 christmas image.jpg

Wrong.

Most pets seem to notice the change of pace as the holidays approach: distracted humans rushing in and out of the house, coming home with packages and shopping bags. Soon, the house fills up with some very strange things, indeed -- a tree (!!!), lights, fake greenery and flickering (fake/battery-operated, in my case, thanks to the new cat) candles. And, sometimes, this frantic seasonal activity can result in a few missed walks or dog park trips, further throwing things out of whack for our pets.

And then. The owner wants a picture.

christmas image 2 .jpg

When I got word this week from Border Collies in Need that they were seeking "holiday-themed" photos of the dogs that have been adopted from the group (for their seasonal card and web page going up shortly) I wanted to participate, so I went to work.

Ah, not so fast. The dogs weren't exactly onboard with this scheme.

While easy-going candid shots of dogs or cats are one thing, posing multiple pets in front of a particular background is, in my experience anyway, not at all easy in the best of situations. Add into that the environmental chaos and stress of ongoing Christmas preparations with visitors and upside-down schedules, and this became one tough assignment.

Tess and Cowboy were clearly uneasy as I tried to coax them to sit nicely, right in front of the backdrop of the garland-draped fireplace mantel.

No go.

And with the (brief and misguided) appearance of the doggie Santa hat prop, all bets were off.
santa hat.jpg

There also is a nano-second delay on my camera phone,   making capturing that exact, ideal moment tricky.

My deadline was short and I was trying to squeeze this in around shopping, gift wrapping, card writing and a series of visits and outings with friends and family this past week while I was on vacation.

Wisely, I quickly decided to scrap the Santa hat.

Let's not make this any more complicated (or humiliating for the dogs, as some of my friends would argue) than it needs to be, I figured. My idea of getting a picture of the two of them together also was abandoned as utterly unrealistic.

I would settle for one shot of each of them with some Christmas lights -- or anything red or green, really -- in the background. So I grabbed a bag of tasty dog treats for bribery purposes and tried to lure them into the picture-perfect composition.

This, however, became the most familiar sight in numerous photos I tried taking of Cowboy (who hates having his picture taken anyway).

cowboy christmas new b.jpg

I titled it the "Butt Blur" (see right-hand corner). There were several rather artistic variations on this theme. (Yes, that's a border collie "statue" next to the fireplace -- my former dog Pilgrim did a double take after seeing it for the first time, convinced the dog was real.)

Now Tess's misfired photos were really quite interesting, in a ghostly, Amityville kind of way.

??????????   Boo!

tess chrismtas anteater.jpg

Yikes. What kind of animal is that? I like the ant eater-like tongue at the end of the nose.

Perseverance, however, eventually paid off.

I finally got 2 shots that were semi-OK. Not great, too blurry and the background could have been a lot better. But I was out of time & they were the best I could get under the circumstances:

santa (new) dogs and trees.jpgWhether your pet's been naughty or nice, a photo with Santa Claus can mark the season with a unique -- and often times humorous -- memento to share with friends and family.

Three of the South Bay's malls are offering professional pet photos with Santa this year:

  • South Bay Galleria at 1815 Hawthorne Blvd. (at Artesia) in Redondo Beach: 7 to 8 p.m. Nov. 30; 7 to 8 p.m. Dec. 7; 8 to 9 p.m. Dec. 14. (310-371-7546)

Local Petco stores are at:

Peter Zippi "Santa Paws" photo event Saturday

| | Comments (0) |

cat and santa.jpg

Here it is, that time of year again. Already.

santadog.jpg smaller.jpgThe first of several pets-with-santa photo sessions takes place this Saturday (Nov. 21) to benefit the Peter Zippi Fund for Animals.

It all happens at the VCA Coast Animal Hospital, 1560 Pacific Coast Highway, in Hermosa Beach. Hours are 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Bring your pets to pose for a professional photo session with Santa. Photos can be loaded onto CDs or used to make unique, one-of-a-kind holiday greeting cards.

The $15 donation supports the Peter Zippi Fund's work with homeless animals.

I don't know who will be playing Santa. But good luck to you, sir.

2010 Pet Calendar roll-out

| | Comments (0) |

Where has this year gone?

It's time to check out some of the new  2010 Pet Calendars -- and with pets being still quite popular in our culture, there are more varieties than ever.

We have pets dressed as rock stars, pets doing yoga and cats sporting high fashion. Something for everyone.

I went to Calendars.com to see what was being offered in the border collie category and found several products, including the "Just Border Collies" 2010 wall calendar ($13.99):

A Border Collies 2010 Pocket Planner ($5.99):

And this one, my favorite, that features wacky "fish-eye" photos ($14.99). This must be the view my cat has of Tess & Cowboy:

About the Bloggers

Daily Breeze reporter Donna Littlejohn has shared her homes with a succession of wonderful, funny, and occasionally difficult canines -- Muffin, Fritz, Ellie, Mercy, Pilgrim and now Cowboy, an Australian shepherd-border collie, and Tess, a border collie. From strong-willed terriers to weirdly obsessed Australian shepherds, they've invaded her world with boundless energy, wet noses, muddy paws and soggy tennis balls. But they've really brought so much more than that -- like laughter and joy, some unexpected life lessons, and more than a few tears along the way.

Josh Grossberg grew up with the usual array of animals: goldfish, dogs, hamsters, parakeets and turtles. He now owns the loudest dog in the South Bay(Video: Rocket the Dog) and is the least popular person on his block. He spends his free time in dog parks, pet shops and always has an extra plastic bag in his pocket just in case. He also has a cat.
