Adorable puppy needs home

| | Comments (1) |

Obviously, we can't publish a post for every dog or cat that needs a home. But this one kim's dog.jpgcomes from a friend of mine, so I figure if I write about it, I could earn a few brownie pints. And who knows, maybe some sort of gift in the mail.

This abandoned puppy was found at a freeway rest stop and is now waiting for a new home at the Santa Monica animal shelter.

It's a 4-month-old white and brown lab mix. She kinda looks like a rat in this photo, but I'm sure she'll grow out of it.

The shelter is at 9th and Olympic. Her ID number is  A030596.

If you bring her home and if you name it Kim, I'll send you a Daily Breeze pencil!

If not, you get nothing. But let me know if you adopt her anyway.

It may shock some of you to know that I have never seen a football game from begining to end.

But it's hard to ignore this time of year, what with that Super Bowl thing happening on aaapuppy-bowl-v.jpgSunday.

But people like me have a choice: Sunday is also the day of the fifth annual Puppy Bowl!

What's a Puppy Bowl? Well, it's puppies running around a tiny football field for a couple of hours. That's pretty much the whole enchilada. Oh, when they have accidents, a man comes out and blows a whistle.

The animals are all rescue dogs and I think charity might somehow be involved, but really who cares about that?

Cats are somehow involved in the half time show.

And get this: According to Wikipedia, 8 million people watched it last year.

It's at 1 p.m. on Animal Planet.

Go here for more details.

If you've never seen it, it's worth sticking around at least until they show the "bowl cam."

I'm thinking of having a Puppy Bowl party. I'm going to invite the neigbhorhood dogs, which includes Buddy, Tango, Cowboy and Tess.

This is how it starts

Sure, it looks cute here, but withing four months, the neighbors are calling the police on you. Trust me. I know from personal experience.

Some of you may remember my sister, The Crazy Dog Lady of Torrance. In fact, some of you ARE my sister -- she's one of our regular readers.

For some reason, she's into cold-weather dogs. She's had several samoyeds over the years and also owns a husky.

(My other sister likes poodles and I'm more into the houndy thing)

Anyway, her elderly dog Piper died about a year ago and she's been itching to get a puppy ever since.

This weekend, she finally took the plunge.

Sherman1.jpg His name is Sherman. He's 3 1/2 months old and already weighs 35 pounds. He's going to be a big boy.

He looks like a lamb.

This is what my sister had to say:

While my other dogs (Cosmo and Jenny) get used to Sherman, he will be spending some time at a doggie day care. It's fun dropping him off in the morning watching all the other dogs welcoming each other like kids greeting each other at school each day.

I'll be introducing him to Rocket (the first-cutest dog in the South Bay) this weekend.

hypnotizing puppies

I don't know how he does it, but this man can apparently make puppies fall asleep at will.

Rocket is not a shy dog. He thinks every other dog on the planet is here for his barking pleasure.

But he's got a circle of good pals and one of them is named Riley. Riley is one of my favorites dogs at the San Pedro dog park too.

When we first met Riley (and his owner, Kathy Jo), Rocket was taller than Riley and quite happy bossing him around. At the time, Riley was only about four months old.

Well, Riley has grown a tad since then. Although he's only 7 months, he's pushing 100 pounds! And judging by the size of his bear paws, he could easily reach 5,000 pounds.

But he's as sweet and playful as a puppy could be. And he and Rocket still romp around, even though Riley can push Rocket around like a little toy.

Here's his picture and note he wrote just for readers of South Bay Pets. Pay special attention to those ears. I could fit my house inside those things!

Hey, names RILEY. I'm a German Shepard as you can tell by my picture. Mostly black with brown paws. I'm seven months old and I weigh 95 pounds.

I have BIG paws, but who looks at those anyway. I also have stripes right behind my ears,

My Pets picked me up at the Shasta County Sheriff Animal Facility. I can't tell you how happy I am that they did. Ya see, I now belong to 5 Pets. There's Mom, Dad, Jennifer (17), Jessica (11) and my favorite pet Joshua (7).

Joshua is really cool. Joshua is autistic but, he's always smiling and ready to play with me. My favorite place to play is the San Pedro "Off Lease" Dog Park. Josh likes to go there with Mom and watch me play with the other dogs.

I like to wrestle with Rocket, he's a hound dog; AARP, he's a white boxer; Palonie, she's a Shepard like me; and little Daisy, not sure what she is. But, we all have a great time at the park. Come by and visit if you'd like. We're usually there in the mornings around 8.

I got this e-mail from our friend, Sanpedrodogs.

It's heartbreaking what some people will do to animals, but it's nice to know there are people out there who will jump in and help them.

My friend found this sweetheart on the street covered in gasoline. With all the fireworks I am sure they were hoping she would go up in flames. They have given her 5 baths and she still smells. If you know of anyone that will foster or adopt this sweet pup please let me know.

Her name is Vanessa, and she is about 7 or 8 weeks old.
If anybody wants more information about this pup, e-mail me at josh.grossberg@dailybreeze.com. And I'll forward your info.

Faithful reader, Little Miss Sunscreen, sent me a link for a business called Flexpets.

It's a place for busy people, i.e., obnoxious yuppies, who are too busy to have pets, but still want to enjoy having a fuzzy companion from time to time.

Flexpets lets you rent them. Or maybe it's some kind of time sharing agreement, I'm not entirely sure because it sounds pretty silly to me.

FLEXPETZ members can spend from just a few hours to a number of days with each of our dogs. FLEXPETZ dogs are available in varied breed sizes to ensure compatibility with our member's individual lifestyles and unique circumstances. Local drop-off and collection to your home or office is available in some locations.

I'm not sure how much it costs, but whatever the fee is, it's overpriced. Heck, I'd pay somebody to take my dog out of my hair for a couple of hours.

And I'll throw in the cat for free.

That's what my fellow pet blogger, Donna, wanted to know.

Puppies, that's what!

About the Bloggers

Daily Breeze reporter Donna Littlejohn has shared her homes with a succession of wonderful, funny, and occasionally difficult canines -- Muffin, Fritz, Ellie, Mercy, Pilgrim and now Cowboy, an Australian shepherd-border collie, and Tess, a border collie. From strong-willed terriers to weirdly obsessed Australian shepherds, they've invaded her world with boundless energy, wet noses, muddy paws and soggy tennis balls. But they've really brought so much more than that -- like laughter and joy, some unexpected life lessons, and more than a few tears along the way.

Josh Grossberg grew up with the usual array of animals: goldfish, dogs, hamsters, parakeets and turtles. He now owns the loudest dog in the South Bay(Video: Rocket the Dog) and is the least popular person on his block. He spends his free time in dog parks, pet shops and always has an extra plastic bag in his pocket just in case. He also has a cat.
