Redondo Beach Dog Park's day with Santa

| | Comments (0) |
The Friends of Redondo Beach Dog Park sponsored dog photos with Santa on Sunday. They sent us a couple photos from the event, which was a big success. Proceeds all go to park maintenance. We'd asked them to share some shots of the event with us.

The e-mail from Nancy Grenier, a member of the RB Dog Park board and a graphic artist who served as the event photographer:

We had a great turnout!  It is one of 3 photo events that we do each year and probably the more popular.  It was a fun filled day for all and  a successful fundraiser for the Redondo Beach Dog Park.

I have attached 2 photos from the event. Thanks for including them on the blog!  :)

We heard from the Friends of the Redondo Beach Dog Park who wanted everyone to know:

Dogs can pose for a 4x6 color photo with Santa -- against "a stunning wintry backdrop" -- for $5 each. The photos are printed while you wait.

T-shirts and sweatshirts also will be fore sale, with all of the proceeds going directly to the maintenance of the dog park.

Hours are 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and the park is at the corner of Flagler Lane and 190th Street.

A day at the (Redondo Beach Dog) park: Meet Max & Moritz, Spanky and Ladybug

Ever hear of Max and Moritz?

I hadn't either until I met the owners of two dogs -- German shepherd/Doberman mixes, litter mates -- at the Redondo Beach Dog Park this afternoon.

The family that owns the dogs originally hail from Switzerland and named them Max and Moritz after two prankster boys featured in popular cartoons some time back, and very well known in Europe.

Max and Moritz (the dogs) were adopted from the PAL Rescue when they were just 4 months old (they're 2 years old now). And what a pair, I don't think they sat still hardly once, although I did get them to pose with John (who is involved with the SS Lane Victory in San Pedro and the ham radio operation at the Los Angeles Maritime Museum). John and his dad, Jacques, bring the dogs to the park about once a week for a much needed romp. Their names seem to be appropriate:

This is Max.

And his buddy, Moritz

Spanky visited for a while:

And this is Ladybug, who turned out to be quite camera shy. I caught her just before she took off:

I received this later from Ladybug's owner:

Ladybug was held as part of a hoarding case and held at SPCALA as evidence for over two years until the trial was settled.  I was volunteering with SPCALA at the time and fostered her during the  latter part of this, after she had been at the shelter and in a kennel for 2 yrs and 8 mos and her behavior was totally the opposite of the dog you met today.  I adopted her last September, she is now in a great place  but shy of new people, especially men, and I thank you for doing what you do in showing the community dogs and their families.

A day at the (Redondo Beach Dog) park: Meet Barkley Barkley

That's right, this dog's first name is the same as his last.

I noticed him right away because he looks so much like my former shelter dog, Ellie, whom I lost about two years ago at the age of 14.

Barkley is mostly Chow with some terrier & Old English Sheepdog mixed in. What a cutey!!

He's still coming back from a December surgery for a "football injury." Really. Check out that black/blue "Chow" tongue.

My dog Ellie -- dubbed "The Cutest Dog in the World" by co-workers after I got her out of the Long Beach Animal Shelter in the mid-1990s -- maybe isn't an exact twin. But when I looked at Barkley's face, I could sure see Ellie (especially when she was younger, the 2 pics below are from her later years); love their button noses!:

And again, Barkley:

A day at the (Redondo Beach Dog) park: Meet Crosby

Crosby is a member of that vast breed pool known as the "terrier mix."

Having had terriers, I do have a soft spot for them, especially the wiry kind like Crosby, a 3-year-old rescue owned by Joanie and Peter whom I met at the Redondo Beach Dog Park Sunday afternoon.

Joanie has done some work with Rover Rescue, one of the South Bay's local rescue groups, and was there also with their other dog, Lola, a golden retriever.

Crosby is a very fast runner and he and Lola both were quite fascinated with the ball I'd brought into the park for Tess.

I'm told Crosby has a special affinity for "squeaky" balls so it's a good thing we didn't have one of those with us.

Terriers are so cute, I think. Crosby could star in his own Disney movie.

As you can see below, neither she nor Lola (only parts of whom can be seen to the right in these photos) rarely took their eyes off Tess' orange ball.

(Cowboy may look interested below, but he's really just waiting for the ball to be thrown so Tess will chase it ... and he can then run behind Tess and maybe find a "humping" opportunity).

About the Bloggers

Daily Breeze reporter Donna Littlejohn has shared her homes with a succession of wonderful, funny, and occasionally difficult canines -- Muffin, Fritz, Ellie, Mercy, Pilgrim and now Cowboy, an Australian shepherd-border collie, and Tess, a border collie. From strong-willed terriers to weirdly obsessed Australian shepherds, they've invaded her world with boundless energy, wet noses, muddy paws and soggy tennis balls. But they've really brought so much more than that -- like laughter and joy, some unexpected life lessons, and more than a few tears along the way.

He now owns the loudest dog in the South Bay(Video: Rocket the Dog) and is the least popular person on his block. He spends his free time in dog parks, pet shops and always has an extra plastic bag in his pocket just in case. He also has a cat.
