Spay-neuter clinic open house Wednesday in San Pedro

| | Comments (0) |
The SNP LA -- Spay Neuter Project of Los Angeles, formerly called Clinico -- will host an open house  from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday (Feb. 8) at its San Pedro site.

Door prizes, refreshments and a tour of the facility will be offered to the public.

SNP LA provides spay neuter services that are affordable and accessible to all pet owners in the Los Angeles area in an effort to create an environment in which animal shelters no longer rely on euthanizing animals as a way of controlling pet population.

The open house -- along with others at the group's Pico Rivera and Van Nuys facilities -- is snpla.jpgoffered in conjunction with the 18th annual Spay Day which is Feb. 28. Found Animals is assisting in the event.

The San Pedro clinic is located on the grounds of the Harbor Area Animal Care Center, 957 N. Gaffey St., San Pedro.

For more information, check out the SNP LA website. Or call 1-888-WE-SPAY-LA.

If you're looking to adopt a dog, check out the pups that need homes at the Harbor Area Animal Care Center, 957 N. Gaffey St., San Pedro. Many of them are running out of time.

Among them is a very cute one-eyed Havanese/poodle mix (miniature) named Alfie (ID# A1193402). He's 11 months old and is very affectionate.

Check the website (first link) or call the shelter at 310-548-2632 or email Leslie Corea at leslie.corea@lacity.org.

A special shepherd and her adult "pup" await adoption at the San Pedro animal shelter

Pumpkin and Oso have been at the shelter since Feb. 22 and appear to be great dogs -- especially if they can be kept together.

PUMPKIN: ID#A1191256

I am an unaltered female, tan and black German shepherd dog. The shelter thinks I am about 7 years old. I weigh approximately 66 pounds.

And here's her pup OSO: ID# A1191269

I am a neutered male, tan and white German shepherd dog. The shelter thinks I am about 4

years old. I weigh approximately 93 pounds.

A couple personal notes from Barbara, the volunteer who is trying to place them:

Please help Oso and his mother Pumpkin get out of the shelter! Oso and Pumpkin were turned into San Pedro's Harbor Shelter when the owner had to move. You can tell Oso's stressed from being separated from his mother after being with her his whole life. He's very loyal, she seems very sweet and calm.
Oso and Pumpkin are a bonded pair who were turned in when their owner was moving and left them behind. Can you help this pair stay together? Oso seems stressed and grieving.

It's all a fundraiser for Pedro Pet Pals, the nonprofit formed a couple years ago to raise funds and help support the Harbor Area Animal Care Center at 957 N. Gaffey St., San Pedro.

Los Angeles Police officer Joe Buscaino, one of five candidates running for San Pedro Honorary Mayor, is sponsoring the "meet and greet" gathering at a private home in South Shores. Pedro Pet Pals, one of the charities he's selected to support during his campaign, will be the beneficiary of the money raised.

This very pretty little girl had an old injury to her eye and no one took care of it, so when she arrived at the shelter, it had to be removed.  It hasn't dampened her dear little personality, though!  She's a little sweetheart, who loves nothing better than to relax on your lap!!!  Perfect little companion!

I don't know why this little flower is at the shelter, but she shouldn't be!  She's 14-years old and blind and as sweet and gentle as can be!  She uses her nose to decide who you are when you approach her cage, hoping you're coming to take her to a warm, loving place.   Such a delicate little angel doesn't deserve to left alone at the shelter.  Could someone PLEASE rescue her????

The shelter thinks I am about 6 years old.I weigh approximately 16 pounds.
I have been at the shelter since Feb 27, 2011
Nothing wrong with this handsome little boy, that a good bath and a bit of grooming didn't take care of.  He still looks a bit dazed in this photo at having all of that awful, matted hair removed, but he's ready to go -- just needs a rescue to help him find a new home!!!
TOFFEE - ID#A1178488

My name is Toffee and I am a neutered male, tan Pit Bull Terrier mix.
The shelter thinks I am about 8 months old.
I weigh approximately 32 pounds.

Is it a bird, is it a plane??  No, it's a very cute puppy with great big ears!!!  Adorable little pitbull mix.  But one eye is damaged and, I believe, blind.  Hey, nobody's perfect! ---  He looks a bit bull terrier-ish, so he's a smaller build than a regular pitbull.  He is now out in the general kennel population, but needs your help, please?

San Pedro clinic joins in free cat sterilization effort

| | Comments (1) |

Actors and Others for Animals will distribute vouchers for free spay/neuter surgeries for 400 cats belonging to Los Angeles County residents beginning today. Among the clinics taking part is Clinico in San Pedro.

It's all part of the 16th annual Spay Day, a yearly campaign of The Humane Society of the United States and Humane Society International.

"We firmly believe that the only way to solve the pet overpopulation problem and end the killing of so many unwanted animals is through spay and netuer," said Actors and Others for animals President JoAnne Worley.

The program is sponsored by the PETCO Foundation and supported in part by a grant from the California Community Foundation. From today through March 9, L.A. County residents can register online at www.actorsandothers.com to receive a voucher that will allow them to have their cats spayed or netuered without charge Surgeries must be completed by April 20 and there is a limit of three vouchers per household.

Participating veterinary clinics are:

  • Animal Clinic of La Mirada
  • Clinico/San Pedro
  • Crenshaw dog & Cat Hospital
  • Fix Nation
  • Gateway Animal Hospital
  • Golden State Humane Long Beach
  • Lynwood Animal Hospital
  • Spay & Neuter Clinic of Simi Valley
  • Valley Vet Hospital/San Gabriel

A news conference announcing other new spay/neuter initiatives for L.A. residents that will benefit both cats and dogs -- thanks to a grant from Found Animals Foundation -- will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Clinico Harbor Clinic, 957 N. Gaffey St., San Pedro. For more information or to book an appointment go to www.clinico.org or call 310-241-0768.

About the Bloggers

Daily Breeze reporter Donna Littlejohn has shared her homes with a succession of wonderful, funny, and occasionally difficult canines -- Muffin, Fritz, Ellie, Mercy, Pilgrim and now Cowboy, an Australian shepherd-border collie, and Tess, a border collie. From strong-willed terriers to weirdly obsessed Australian shepherds, they've invaded her world with boundless energy, wet noses, muddy paws and soggy tennis balls. But they've really brought so much more than that -- like laughter and joy, some unexpected life lessons, and more than a few tears along the way.

Josh Grossberg grew up with the usual array of animals: goldfish, dogs, hamsters, parakeets and turtles. He now owns the loudest dog in the South Bay(Video: Rocket the Dog) and is the least popular person on his block. He spends his free time in dog parks, pet shops and always has an extra plastic bag in his pocket just in case. He also has a cat.
