The people? How many people??

| | Comments (0) |

California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger told reporters Tuesday that he is poised to come out with a new redistricting plan that will include rempping of state and congressional lines. To Sen. Dianne Feinstein's apparent horror, the new maps will be created by -- in Schwarzenegger's words -- "the people of California."

``People? How many people?'' a confused Feinstein asked Schwarzenegger at a news conference in her Senate office. ``You wouldn't want judges, or some independent...?''

``No, that didn't work the last time,'' Schwarzengger said, referencing his failed attempt to pass a redistricting proposition. ``It's going to be fun," he insisted.

"Oh, yeah," Feinstein replied, adding diplomatically, "I think I need to study it more."

Colbert: Sanchez not a Whore

The somewhat high-schoolish blowup over Rep. Loretta Sanchez resigning from the congressional Hispanic caucus because chairman Rep. Joe Baca allegedly called her a "whore" got the appropriate treatment on Wednesday night's The Colbert Report.

Click here to hear what the Comedy Central satirist had to say about the whole silly he-said/she-said thing.

(Update: That link didn't seem to work, so try this: and then click on "California Values Watch: Sanchez")

Ultimately he comes to Sanchez's defense, looking beyond who said what or why, to personally investigate, naturally, whether the congresswoman is in fact a whore.

His conclusion: She's not. But the same can't be said for the rest of Congress.

"But there's more compelling evidence that Loretta Sanchez is not a whore,'' Colbert concludes. "Every time I'm in Washington, I offer to pay her for sex, as part of my 434-part series, "Better Know Which of Your Representatives Will Have Sex for Money.'"

Immediately, a graphic map of the United States appears on screen, and more than half the congressional districts are highlighted.

"But California's 47th District? No. Congressman Loretta Sanchez always politely declines. She's a lady."

Immediately following that piece, be sure to catch Colbert riffing on San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom's recent sex scandals.
