Sipping wine and shouting loud with the Burbank Democratic Club
By 9 p.m., the wine bottles were running low and the conversation was hot at David Dobson's home. The Burbank Democratic Club was excited and passionate.
"Almost every Edwards person went to Obama," said Larry Nemecek, 44, an editor and writer. "I got really angry when people said, 'You're for Edwards because you're a racist or a genderist.' No! I thought (Obama) was too green and (Clinton) was a lightning rod. But I can support any of them."
"Obama is winning in Nebraska!" interjected Janet Reynolds, 63, the club's president.
"We're just a bunch of ordinary people who feel like you can't just sit there and do nothing," Nemecek continued. You feel like a minuteman who's got to grab your musket... but you still keep your day job."
"Delegate count! Delegate count!" came a yell from the other room.
Near the chicken stew and cold taquitos, Kevin Harrop, 48, an electrical contractor, was laying into the theory that Obama is less electable because of his middle name (Hussein) or alleged ties to Islam.
"That's just a racist, ridiculous piece of s---!" Harrop raged. "His father was a Muslim and he abandoned the family at a young age. He's a Christian! And for anyone to say otherwise is just ridiculous!"
He peppered his oratory with phrases such "for the love of Pete!" and less repeatable terms.
"You know he's crazy, right?" Dobson said to another guest, but Harrop kept going strong.
"Delegate count!" he growled. "Shh! I hear you scratching on that pad! Keep quiet!"
MSNBC flashed 659 for the Senator from Illinois to 623 for the Senator from New York, which drew a "woo!" Then the analyst did some onscreen calculation and projected Obama could end up with 841 to Clinton's 837.
"Yeah!" Harrop roared, pumping his first like Elvis at the '68 Comeback Special. "My God! If Obama gets more delegates than Clinton, this thing is wide open. He doesn't need to win tonight, he just needs to maintain the momentum. He's right on her heels!"
