Lancaster puts trust in God

Sparking the latest debate about religion and government, the Lancaster City Council has unanimously approved placing the motto "In God We Trust" on the back wall of the council chambers. Karen Maeshiro in Daily News.

The city joins more than 30 others around the country that have approved similar actions in the past six years, but some Lancaster residents are decrying the move as a violation of the separation of church and state.

"It's not that I'm atheist or don't believe in God," resident Debbie Phillips said after the council action last week. "I don't feel that that's the first thing people should see when they walk into council chambers.
