Mayor, council dispute over gang funds

In an effort to head off a challenge to his new power over Los Angeles' gang programs, Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa on Tuesday reluctantly agreed to a compromise with the City Council over how to use $2.7 million for the initial anti-gang effort. Daily News.

The move - which came after a threat to the funding - is expected to be resolved by the full City Council today and will place the money in the city budget and designate it for anti-gang programs.

But the Mayor's Office also will have to return to the council for final approval to authorize the money to be used for any contracts. Villaraigosa aides said the mayor may use his veto power to try to block the council.
