Some teachers jobs to be saved
Los Angeles Unified chief Ramon Cortines said Monday he could save the jobs of nearly 2,000 elementary school teachers who received layoff notices last month, but that the school district would still have to let go of some 6,850 employees to stay afloat. Announcing the jobs-saving plan on the eve of today's important school board decision on the future of thousands of workers, Cortines said the district needed to focus on elementary schools.
The plan would not benefit middle and high schools.
