Assessor issues warning of fake notices

As Los Angeles County mails out hundreds of thousands of property tax bills, Assessor Rick Auerbach on Monday warned homeowners to be on the lookout for scams mounted by companies offering to file assessment reduction claims for a hefty fee.Troy Anderson in the Daily News.

The private companies mail official-looking offers to conduct a decline-in-value review - a service the Assessor's Office performs for free. The companies, however, are charging $150 or more.
