California Democratic Sen. Barbara Boxer, chairman of the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee, released the following statement regarding President Barack Obama's decision to attend a long-anticipated, high-stakes global climate summit in Copenhagen.

Obama is expected to propose an emissions reduction target for the United States in the range of 17 percent below 2005 levels in 2020.

"I am so pleased that the President is going to Copenhagen to address one of the most pressing issues of our time - global warming," Boxer said.

"The goal he announced today, in the range of 17 percent, reflects the work that was done in the House of Representatives and in the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee.

"It is realistic, it's smart, and it's credible."
