Boxer on Senate passage of health care reform bill
California Democratic U.S. Sen. Barbara Boxer, after an epic struggle in which the Democratic-controlled Senate passed health care legislation Thursday, made the following statement on the passage:
"Today we demonstrated that we will no longer stand by while 14,000 Americans lose their health insurance every day, nearly two-thirds of bankruptcies result from a personal health care crisis and California families watch their premiums rise four times faster than their incomes," Boxer said.
"This legislation will make health care more affordable for small businesses and families, end insurance industry abuses, strengthen Medicare, help our seniors afford prescription drugs, and expand coverage to 31 million Americans -- all while reducing the deficit.
"I will continue to work with Senator Feinstein to strengthen the bill in conference for Californians and all Americans."

There are many standards already in use in state and local health departments. What is the relationship between the various sets of standards in the field and the new accreditation standards? The PHAB standards and measures are being developed with consideration of 1) NACCHO's Operational Definition of a Functional Local Health Department, 2) the instruments of the National Public Health Performance Standards Program, 3) existing standards and measures from state-based accreditation and related programs, and 4) ASTHOs report on services offered by states. The Standards Development Workgroup reviewed numerous standards and measures and selected what they felt were the best of the best.
