Pomona Council prepares to fill District 5 post; Seat will become open Saturday when Rothman is sworn in as mayor
POMONA - Pomona City Council members opted this week to appoint someone to fill the District 5 council seat which will become vacant Saturday afternoon when Mayor-Elect Elliott Rothman is sworn in as mayor.
Council members had a special meeting late Thursday afternoon where they approved a resolution with the results of the Nov. 4 election results.
At the same meeting council members voted in favor of appointing a replacement to the District 5 post.
Council members also agreed to take applications from District 5 residents interested in being considered for the post. The district encompasses southwest Pomona including the Westmont and Phillips Ranch areas.
The council has until Jan. 5 to fill the seat and if no action is taken then City Clerk Marie Macias must call for an election.
Holding a special election would cost between $35,000 and $40,000, according to a city staff report.
Applications for the district seat will be accepted until Dec. 15, Councilman Steve Atchley said at the meeting.
Rothman will be sworn in as mayor in a ceremony scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday at the Council Chambers of Pomona City Hall, 505 S. Garey Ave.
Atchley, who was re-elected to his post as District 6 councilman, will also be sworn in at the ceremony.
