Pomona prepares to fill District 5 seat; District Councilman will become city's new mayor Saturday

| | Comments (0) |

POMONA - City Council members opted this week to appoint
someone to fill the District 5 council seat which will become vacant
this Saturday afternoon when Mayor-elect Elliott
Rothman is sworn in as mayor.

Additionally, the council decided to appoint a replacement for
Rothman's District 5 seat rather than hold a special election.

Council members have agreed to take applications from District 5
residents interested in being considered for the post which
encompasses southwest Pomona including the Westmont and Phillips
Ranch areas.

The council has until Jan. 5 to fill the seat and if no action is
taken, City Clerk Marie Macias must call for an election, City
Attorney Arnold Alvarez-Glasman said at the meeting.

This week, Macias said Planning Commissioner Tim Saunders has already
expressed interest in the post and has submitted a resume along with
five letters of support.

Saunders is Rothman's appointee to the commission.

Applications for the district seat will be accepted until Dec. 15 and
be considered at that night's meeting, Alvarez-Glasman said Friday.

The council could appoint someone or take additional steps before
selecting an applicant for the remaining two years on Rothman's term,
he said.

Rothman and Councilman Stephen Atchley will be sworn in to their posts in a
ceremony scheduled for 2 p.m. today at City Hall, 505 S. Garey Ave.

Applications for the District 5 seat will be available at the City
Clerk's Office on the second floor of City Hall, 505 S. Garey Ave.

Applications are also available online by going to the home page of
the city's Web site, www.ci.pomona.ca.us., and clicking on "District
5 Council Seat Application."

Perspective applicants must be U.S. citizens, a registered voter in
Pomona and live in District 5.

Those who meet those requirements should provide a resume with a
completed application which must be turned in by 7 p.m. Dec. 15.
