Volunteer groups seeking toys and food for needy Pomona families

POMONA -- Two volunteer organizations are in need of food and
toys for distribution to needy families this Christmas.

Volunteers with the Society of St. Vincent de Paul St.
Madeleine Conference and with the Society of St. Vincent
de Paul St. Joseph Conference are asking for the donations.

Volunteers with the St. Madeleine group had nearly twice as many
families seeking their help due to the difficult economic
environment, said the group's president, Dorothy Pinedo.

The group had planned to provide assistance to about 50 families and
about 150 children but it now is trying to provide for 90 families
and 248 children, Pinedo said.

An additional 10 families are on a waiting list hoping to get some
sort of assistance, she said.

Volunteers with the St. Madeleine group are also in need of new,
unwrapped toys for children ages 3 to 17 but are especially in need
of gifts suitable for teens such as board games and athletic
equipment, Pinedo said. The group has 45 teens it needs to provide
gifts for.

Pinedo said her group will try to stretch out food donations as much
as possible but it is still in need of at least 20 frozen or canned
hams in addition to fresh produce, pies and quart-size containers of
milk.

Candy and stockings with other treats are also needed.

Financial donations to be used in purchasing food and toys are also
being accepted. Checks can be made out to the Society of St. Vincent
de Paul St. Madeleine Conference and should have "2008 Christmas"
written on the check.

Donations can be dropped off Thursday at
the St. Vincent de Paul St. Madeleine Conference office found behind the St.
Madeleine Catholic Church Rectory, 931 E. Kingsley Ave.

Arrangements to have donations picked up can be made by calling Pinedo at (909)
706-2353.

Donations will also be accepted Friday morning, which is the day the
volunteers will distribute the food and toys.

The St. Vincent de Paul St. Joseph Conference is also in need of food
items including canned vegetables and fruit. They also need rice,
beans, boxes of instant potatoes, stuffing mix, pies and powdered or
evaporated milk.

Checks can be made out to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul St.
Joseph Conference and should have "2008 Christmas" written on them.

Donations can be dropped off at the organization's office on the
grounds of St. Joseph Catholic Church, 1150 W. Holt Ave. between 9
a.m. and 11 a.m. Friday and Monday.

To make drop-off or pick-up arrangements, call (909) 469-9773.
