Pomona Councilwoman sees education through principal's eyes
POMONA - Councilwoman Danielle Soto was among various business people and elected officials who this week shadowed Pomona Unified School District principals as part of the Principal for a Day program.
Soto shadowed Marshall Middle School Principal Terry Mora.
The visit afforded Soto a chance to see the various matters a principal handles on a typical day and the academic activities taking place on a campus, Soto said Thursday.
It also did something else.
"It was like a flashback and going down memory lane," said Soto, who as a girl attended Palomares Middle School.
Principal for a Day is a collaborative effort of the school district and the Pomona Chamber of Commerce that gives chamber members a chance to familiarize themselves with the district's schools and the many positive things going on the campuses, said Tim McGillivray, spokesman for the district.
Guest principals spent Tuesday morning with school principals taking part in various activities such as visiting classrooms, interacting with students and sometimes even sitting in on meetings with parents and faculty.
Soto's visit to the middle school campus included dropping in on various classes and listening to the school's young band members.
"I even got to go into a math class and help a student with an algebra problem," she said.
It was good to see students working on concepts that they will encounter in college and helping each other out, Soto said.
During her visit Soto met some of the students parents.
"They were very nice to me and very welcoming," she said.
The visit also offered a chance to talk with the school's principal about the school community's concerns such as graffiti near the school, Soto said, adding it is a matter she hopes to help address.
Soto said she'd like to take part in the Principal for a Day program again next year.
"Maybe I could go to an elementary school or a high school," she said.
