Pomona group to celebrate Juneteenth
The Willie White Park Focus Group will host a Juneteenth Celebration from 7 to 9:30 p.m. Thursday (June 17).
The celebration will be at the Willie White Park Community Center, 3065 Battram St.
Juneteenth festivities commemorate the celebrations of June 19, 1865, the day slaves in Texas learned they were free.
On Jan. 1, 1863, President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation that declared slaves in rebel states free. However, the news did not reach some slaves until Union Gen. Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, and made an announcement.
The event will include the participation of guest speaker Chris Frausto who will discuss slavery and the slave trade.
Following the presentation, the Juneteenth Celebration of Freedom Feast will begin featuring Southern cuisine.
The event is free and open to the public when guests bring a food dish.
Willie White Park Focus Group organizes monthly meetings on the third Thursday of the month where participants have the chance to speak with elected officials and representatives of local government, the Pomona Unified School District and other agencies.
For information on the event and the organization call 909-596-4273 or 909-392-8666.

The Emancipation Proclamation did not free any slaves. It was the Union Army that did it. So, in Texas, a place where white Americans decided to kill Mexicans to propagate slavery, it was Gen. Granger who really freed the slaves.
I savour, result in I found exactly what I used to be looking for. You've ended my 4 day lengthy hunt! God Bless you man. Have a great day. Bye
