REDLANDS — Senior 6-8 center Reyer Van Mouwerik came off the bench to score a career-high 21 points as Redlands High School remained unbeaten by rolling over crosstown rival Redlands East Valley 69-55 in a Citrus Belt League game Wednesday.
“There’s starting to be a little bit of pressure,” Van Mouwerik said of the Terriers’ perfect 18-0 record. “But it makes it fun.”
“We’re trying not to think about it,” junior guard Ricky Peetz said. “Teams are coming in and playing extra hard against us, but we’re trying to think of ourselves as underdogs.”
Redlands figures to be severely tested Friday when the Terriers go to Eisenhower to meet the Eagles in a battle of teams 6-0 in league play — and ranked Nos. 1 and 2 in the CIF-Southern Section Division II-AA poll.
“That will be a great game,” REV coach Bill Berich said. “I’d go see it if we weren’t playing.”
Redlands, ranked No. 11 in the CIF-SS by maxpreps.com, scored the first nine points of the second quarter to erase a 15-14 REV lead.
REV was still in it, at 43-32, but Van Mouwerik took advantage of nice interior passing to score four layups in the final two minutes of the third quarter as the Terriers went up 54-32.
Redlands coach Brad Scott said his team is well aware it is unbeaten. “I told the kids they should enjoy it,” he said. “Not too many teams at any level are 18-0.”
REV (4-2, 13-7) lost to Redlands 82-59 in the Kiwanis Tournament final last month, and Berich noted his team is getting closer.
He also noted the Terriers “are very good.”
“They’ve got all the pieces,” he said. “They have some guys inside, guys who take care of the ball, guys who can shoot from the perimeter.”
