Mark Keppel 57, Serrano 48
Maybe Michelle Lo should get leg cramps more often.
The Keppel High School sophomore suffered the cramp to her lower left leg 56 seconds into the fourth quarter with visiting Serrano leading, 43-41, in a CIF-Southern Section Division II-A first-round playoff game Thursday night.
She re-entered the game 55 seconds later and sparked the Aztecs to a 57-48 victory.
Nine seconds after coming back in and Serrano leading 44-43, she was fouled attempting a layup. She made both free throws.
The Diamondbacks committed a turnover and Lo connected on a 3-pointer from the corner. She stole the ball at midcourt and scored an uncontested layup. The 5-foot-8 guard — Keppel’s second-tallest player — had given the Aztecs some breathing room and a 50-44 lead.
“I was like, ‘Oh, please.’ That’s all I wanted,” Lo said of her 3-pointer.
Lo then had a big assist to Janise Ho for a basket after Tiffany Rubin blocked an Amber Chavez 3-point attempt, and got the rebound, to give the Aztecs a 56-44 lead.
The Almont League champions outscored the Diamondbacks, who finished third in the Mojave River League, 12-0 in a 4:08 span in the quarter. Lo had seven of her nine points in the quarter.
“She wanted to get back in there and was a big, big spark for us,” Keppel coach Tan Ha said. “She went like on a 7-0 run.
“She’s our playmaker. Some days she doesn’t score much. But when we need her to make the big plays, she steps up. Our offense starts with her. She gets everybody involved.”
Serrano only scored five points in the fourth quarter after swapping the lead numerous times for the first three quarters.
“They fell apart,” Serrano coach Ross Hansen said. “We just got rattled. We just lost it. We started falling behind and started playing the way we hadn’t played all game. We played real well for 3 1/2 quarters. We just couldn’t put it together.”
Ashley Jones scored a team-high 15 points in the first three quarters. She did not score in the fourth quarter and fouled out with 2:59 to play.
